So - Are Dems Going to Respond to NSA Wiretapping Travesty?
Or are they going to let the cons get away with the old standards:

"We are at war."
"We are living in a post 9-11 world."
"Now that the terrorists know about this, our country less safe."

They damn well better have a comeback to every one of these talking points. And it had better be today.

1. Oo Scary Issue Runandhide!
No. A few honest brave souls will stand and oppose and speak up. The Timid Consensus will run away again.

2. You're so negative
Voters don't respond to negativity, you know. I don't think it would be wise to make a big fuss about our terrorist-catching telephone program. (put sarcasm thing here)

Besides, they probably had a big, secret ribbon cutting ceremony with Bush and Lott and DeLay and Feinstein and Lieberman and company, celebrating the new connectivity between AT&T and the NSA.

audio of Pat Leahy ranting about it. I don't know if it was on the Senate floor or where but I heard the clip.

edit - I just saw a clip on CNN. It looks like it was a committee hearing.

4. Hell no, surveillance has always been fine with them,
So long as they're not the ones being watched.

After all, they were fine with Americans being monitored by Carnivore and Echelon, why would they give a rat's ass about data-mining?

Dear Mr. Attorney General,

Thank you so much for keeping us safe from terrorists.

7. Answers to those points
Edited on Thu May-11-06 10:03 AM by maine_raptor
No's 1 & 2: "We never ripped up the Constitution this badly during a war before."

No 3: "Destroying the Constitution and living in fear is exactly what the terrorists want. Giving up Freedom does not make us safer, it does just the opposite."

Edit for a fat fingered typo

9. I like #3.
And maybe if they put it in terms like "The terrorists are winning - we are losing," it will snap some of those freepers (who like to brag about the US kicking butt) out of their stupor.

I can't take credit for all of it. The last part is a re-phrasing of dear ol'Ben Franklin.

21. Do you want Hillary to know that you've called the NRA because the
brown-skinned gays are coming to take your guns away?

That should put it into terms even the dumbest Freepers can understand. Hit's all their "hatrogasmic" hot buttons.

17. Senator Leahy
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-05-10-nsa_x.htm

Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the ranking Democrat on the panel, sounded incredulous about the latest report and railed against what he called a lack of congressional oversight. He argued that the media was doing the job of Congress.
''Are you telling me that tens of millions of Americans are involved with al Qaeda?'' Leahy asked. ''These are tens of millions of Americans who are not suspected of anything ... Where does it stop?''
The Democrat, who at one point held up a copy of the newspaper, added: ''Shame on us for being so far behind and being so willing to rubber stamp anything this administration does. We ought to fold our tents.''

It wouldn't be very fun getting the letters filled with anthrax. Also being afraid to fly on private planes.
