http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/14555373.htm

"Floyd Patterson, who avenged an embarrassing loss to Ingemar Johansson by beating him a year later to become the first boxer to regain the heavyweight title, died Thursday. He was 71."

14. If you didn't intend it
to come out sounding as others have noted that it indeed does, then I think the majority of DUers would agree with Voltaire that ignorance is the mother of all cruelty. Floyd was a good and decent man, who overcame a very harsh childhood to become an outstanding athlete and American citizen. He deserves our respect. Anyone who fails to respect Floyd Paterson is either ignorant, or an asshole.

18. There is a thread
on the sports forum where I discuss Floyd's career, and the pleasure I had in getting to know Floyd Patterson. He was a good man. He supported Martin. He used to like to go south, where black folk were getting their heads busted for taking part in the civil rights movement. Floyd enjoyed walking up to the drinking fountains marked "whites only" and "colored." He would drink out of both of them, and then say, "Hmmm, they taste the same to me." None of the KKKlansmen, no matter if they had their blue daytime or white nighttime uniforms on, tried to knock Floyd around.

Rest in peace, Champ.

20. Right.
"Many people know Patterson's background. A product of the Brooklyn ghetto. One of many children in the family. No clothes of his own to wear. A ludicrous figure in outsized garments of his father's. Overly sensitive, overly shy as a result, he turned ever inward and found a nest, a hole in the subway where he would sit, alone, afraid, watching trains go by. Little wonder he became a disturbed child.

"He wound up in the Wiltwyck School, then located in Aesopus, New York, a school for disturbed children. Oddly, at about the time that Floyd was there, a documentary film was made about the school. The film was mainly about one introverted black youngster. It was called The Quiet One. It could have been named after Floyd Patterson.

"At the Witwyck School, Floyd discovered the countryside. He fell in love with it for the rest of his life. He loves quiet, he loves peace, he loves to walk alone, to hear birds, to pick up a twig, to throw a stick in the air, to watch the ripples in the stream when he tosses a rock in. .... How odd that one with such a background should wind up in a profession of violence ... But strangely, in apparent contradiction of his whole personality, Floyd Patterson di."

26. I'm on Ali's side - Patterson gets little respect from me...
... He was the one who refused to called Ali by his name (which was a symbolic huge thing, tied up with civil rights & all), if I'm not mistaken, leading directly to an even bigger can of whoop-ass from Ali than he might otherwise have gotten.

Unless Patterson apologized for that kinda crap, he gets no respect from me beyond simply being a human being.

"What's my name? Is my name Clay? What's my name fool?!?"

Rock on Ali.

30. Point of fact:
Ali disliked Floyd in 1965. That was 40 years ago. As Ali fans should know, Muhammad and Floyd became friends in the early 1970s, and remained on good terms.

35. If Patterson apologized at some point....
... Then it's all good for me.

But an apology is, for me, necessary get any substantial respect out of me towards Patterson. Ali's a bigger man than me - he could very well have buried the hatchet w/o an apology (I don't know either way). I'm not so magnanimous as that.

And you frame the issue misleadingly. It's not that "Ali disliked Floyd" - Patterson was a complete jackass, HENCE Ali disliked him.

53. LOL! (shrug) I guess we disagree...
Though I still fail to see why disagreement on the grounds I've mentioned makes me either ignorant or an asshole (your original conclusion). Seems to me that we both agree on "the bald facts of the matter", and end up with a differing value assessment. We agree on what mushrooms taste like, but you like them, and I don't, as it were.

But cheers anyhoo!

58. Do you think for a second that if Ali had it to do all over again....
... he would've done any differently? (the whole "what's my name?!?", punishing Patterson for being a jackass, etc.)

Me neither. I get the feeling you're willfully misunderstanding what is intended by my saying "I'm on Ali's side".

That meant: I'm on Ali's side on that pivotal issue leading up to their fight, and the time period was part of it. And I think it was clear that my statement meant that.

There may be other stuff, in other time periods that I don't agree with Ali on.

I'm just wondering which one I am: ignorant or asshole... LOL!
