Dragon skin flexible armor flunks tests
WASHINGTON - The Army’s struggle to find a new, more flexible body armor was dealt a setback Friday when high-tech vests called Dragon Skin failed to pass military testing, a senior defense official said.

After three days of testing this week, the Army determined the body armor does not meet military specifications, said the official, who would not specify which tests the armor failed. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the results have not yet been released.

The Army paid about $170,000 to buy 30 sets of the armor for the testing.

10. Interesting
Don't recall ever reading the price of equipment tested by the Army before in a news story, only in stories about cost overruns - is the Army trying to cover its ass before the fact by making it seem too expensive? Anyway, Dragon Skin was dissed by the Army long before the testing - they sent some talking head on Lehrer to explain why it wasn't even a contender. And Army tests are designed to yield the desired result - just look at the Stryker. This piece of shit foisted on our men is the centerpiece of entire fighting units - despite the fact its laughable excuse for armor can't even stop a well placed slingshot strike. Most of the troops I know refer to them as "Purple Heart Boxes." Another Rumsfeld/PNAC fuck up.

3. Hrm, I wonder if it failed because of penetration testing or for some....
...other reason.

11. probably because the appropriate campaign contributions
weren't made.

seriously, typical of this administration to pursue DRAGONSKIN. they seem to believe in every other fairy tale someone spins them, why not dragons?

were these the WMDs Saddam was hiding? and by WMD I mean "Weally Mean Dragons"

4. Wasn't Dragonskin the stuff that
the Army claimed a while back would void soldiers' life insurance payouts?

5. Indeed
It was supposedly superior. I would like to know what portion of the test it failed. It could be something as stupid as being the wrong shade of green or a serious as not stopping a speeding bullet.

16. I had a friend in QC that caused a todo by flunking million $ worth
of parts because it failed the applicable MIL SPEC, not any of the numerous performance requirements, but it wasn't stenciled every three foot with the legend "waveguide Mil Spec NNN" as delineated in the specification.

14. thats what i heard
i remember a report on it on CNN and the dragon skin people were like we have all the qualifications. I also remember people buying it for their kid that was in the war because they didn't even have body armor and the army made them send it back. Why are they sooo screwed up?

7. So it flunks the "tests"
Evidently the stuff they use flunks too. So is it better or worse than what they are using now is the only pertinent question.

12. It flunks
the test of how many former Pentagon Procurement officers they have in over-compensated, under-worked positions: not enough.
