GA girls suspended for singing Spice Girls song (over the word "lover")
The parents of five Gwinnett County teens are still shaking their heads in disbelief after the girls found themselves abruptly suspended from school for singing a Spice Girls song.

Not only that, they were also barred from going to their graduation celebration.

The 8th graders at Five Forks Middle School are just days away from their big end-of-the-year celebration. But straight-A student Rachel Lowe won't be there. Neither will four of her closest friends.

<snip>

The issue is over one word that the principal thought inappropriate -- lover.

13. I'm from GA too originally

and actually went to high school in Gwinnett County and lived near Five Forks. Five Forks is so-called because the community sprang up in a place where five roads came together - the five forks. The roads in the area are really confusing because many of them were originally Indian trails, meaning that a lot of the roads make no sense at all - twisting and winding every which way.

Edited to add that I looked up Five Forks Middle School. Here's the principal's e-mail address if anyone wants to send her a comment (I just did): mary_hensien@gwinnett.k12.ga.us

in the future. Hopefully, if their graduation hasn't happened yet, the decision will be quickly overturned - or else a lawsuit will be quickly served to the school board. (That article is dated May 18; anyone have an update?)

9. Theocracy in action -- and it will only get worse.
What we're witnessing is the methodical re-imposition of the Dark Age that began with the Edict of Milan in 313AD, when Constantine made Christianity the religion of all Westernesse. This Dark Age -- the darkest in human history -- lasted 1,476 unspeakably blood-drenched years (until the American Revolution established the world's first avowedly secular state), and continued even after that in wars of genocide and imperial conquest. But now after a partial but nevertheless blessed interregnum of only 211 years -- from the end of the Revolution in 1789 until the seizure of the government by the Bush Regime in 2000 -- the Dark Ages are back: Christian theocracy in the West, Islamic theocracy in the Middle East and Asia, in either instance its underlying purpose the protection of capitalism, and this time -- because of the omnipotence granted government by technology -- a Dark Age that will last forever, literally until humanity itself is extinct.

Unless of course people wake up in time -- which (given the consenting silence of the mainstream churches) is increasingly unlikely.

In any case, the morality-police persecution of these girls in Georgia is but the beginning. We will see much much worse -- even the resumption of witch trials -- before this is over: if indeed it ever ends.

The only offensive thing those girls did was sing a Spice Girls song in the first place. When I was an 8th grader, I had much more complex musical tastes.

Seriously, though, I went to high school in Gwinnett County. This latest idiocy doesn't surprise me one bit. The Five Forks school principal needs to get some perspective on this - barring these 5 girls from attending their own graduation ceremony is a draconian punishment for such a minor incident (and for that matter, why didn't the principal vet the song in advance to find out what the lyrics were?).

Also, I know from first-hand experience that Gwinnett County has a huge drug problem among its bored and restless middle-class teens - I know because I used to be one of them. That's an issue that deserves far more attention than the words to a pop song.

What do you bet the school principal is a fundie?

Edited to add that the school principal should be delighted that these girls even wanted to participate in the talent show instead of being apathetic and dismissive of school activities. This incident really bothers me, especially since I went to school in that area (and lived close to where this school is). I knew so many kids who didn't get involved in anything because of the same kind of attitude the Five Forks principal has. They did drugs and got drunk instead.

15. Uh... I'm sorry.. am I missing something? It was a Spice Girls song...
and it's 2006. These little girls should have been beaten within an inch of their lives. They should have been made an example for all their peers. "If you're this stupid, you will not be tolerated in polite society."

In fact, they probably should have been killed. There are limits.

17. But "lover" can mean "sweetheart", it doesn't necessarily mean
sex partner. It was used as a term for sweetheart, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc., for centuries, which the principal and teaching staff should know. What a bunch of goofballs! And it's likely to get worse.

19. wait a minute...
If I remeber the spice girl fad correctly aren't those girls at the top of the age bracket for that "bands" target audience? Christ I can't imagine how that principle would have reacted to a talent show at my school where a kid fucking sang Piano Man by Billy Joel PERFECTLY, while playing the piano and the god damn harmonica all it once. Best performance by a kid my age I'd ever seen, hell that I think anyone in our town has seen but think of the children for it mentions weed, alchohol, and lonesome drunkeness.
