Dixie Chicks Poll in Lubbock, Texas (Lubbock or Leave It) Please DU!!!!
This poll needs help! Let's shock the heck out of this city that still bans Dixie Chicks music, even though the lead singer was raised there. 80% say they won't buy the CD. Let's change those numbers! I've included the lyrics to the song "Lubbock or Leave it" and a link where you can listen to it. I've also included some of the comments that were posted on this news topic on their message board.

Do you plan to buy the new Dixie Chicks album?

Thank you for participating in our poll. Here are the results so far.

Yes 20%

No 80%

<snip>

The song "Lubbock or Leave it" is fast paced and upbeat. Some listeners may not like what the lyrics say, while others won't get the chance to even hear it. Most Lubbock country stations are still not playing their music.

Country Radio station 99.5 The Bear is the only station playing the song in Lubbock. Radio personalities, Jane Prince-Jones and Rick Gilbert say for the most part, people want to hear it so they are playing it. "We don't like to sensor things around here and there has been a lot of publicity with this song. .....

KLLL and 105.7, The Rebel say they will not be playing the Dixie Chicks. They say it's simply because their listeners do not want to hear it.

"Lubbock Or Leave It"

Dust bowl, Bible belt
Got more churches than trees
Raise me, praise me, couldn't save me
Couldn't keep me on my knees
Oh, boy, rave on down loop 289
That'll be the day you see me back
In this fool's paradise

Temptation's strong
(Salvation's gone)
I'm on my way
To hell's half acre
How will I ever
How will I ever
Get to heaven now

Throwing stones from the top of your rock
Thinking no one can see
The secrets you hide behind
Your southern hospitality
On the strip the kids get lit
So they can have a real good time
Come Sunday they can just take their pick
From the crucifix skyline

Temptation's strong
(Salvation's gone)
I'm on my way
To hell's half acre
How will I ever
How will I ever
Get to heaven now
Get to heaven now

International airport
A quarter after nine
Paris Texas, Athens Georgia's
Not what I had in mind
As I'm getting out I laugh to myself
Cause this is the only place
Where as you're getting on the plane
You see Buddy Holly's face

I hear they hate me now
Just like they hated you
Maybe when I'm dead and gone
I'm gonna get a statue too

Temptation's strong
(Salvation's gone)
I'm on my way
To hell's half acre
How will I ever
How will I ever
Get to heaven now
Get to heaven now
How will I ever

Get to heaven now

Bless your old hearts.
Born and raised right here Lubbock
The album is great. In some instances it strays from their beaten path of bluegrass, they've traded in their fiddles for guitars, and while it's somewhat darker and more driven than previous endeavors it still manages to stay true to it's bluesy tail feather shakin roots. Lubbock or Leave it is exceptional.
Can any of you point out anything in the lyrics to "Lubbock or Leave It" that isn't true about our city?
I admire anyone who can stand up for what they believe and when the world spits in their face, they spit back.
So if Natalie has "made a mistake" and is now "paying the price" --- when willl Bush atone for his own sins?
This may be hard pill for you all to swallow, but try it with water.
**********
You don't have to do anything. You don't have to buy their music, nor do you have to tune in to 99.5 so you can "listen & note every advertiser" and contact each one by telephone threatning to "boycott" their business if they continue to advertise their services on a station that airs the Dixie Chicks, as you've said you will do. Who has the time for this? Are you employed? And why on earth would you do something so creepy and radical? Does it hurt you that deeply? The feelings must still be raw.
**********
Wonder when all of you objecting to the Dixie Chicks are going to start turning off Jay Leno and David Letterman???? they say and have said MUCh worse about Bushy than Natalie ever has! Yet, you keep watching them. Get off it, grow up, don't buy their music if you want, but stop depriving those of us who have nothing against them from hearing their music on ALL the radio stations.
**********
Ok, I was willing to let the Chicks slide after Natalie apologized. My problem with them is this: if you want to gripe about the president, fine. The protest happened outside of this country, and Natalie should have known better. Being a grown-up means knowing when to keep your trap shut, and poor Nat has yet to learn that lesson. As far as the song goes, so? What town does not have hypocrites? What does the song prove about Lubbock that isn't true about every other town in this country?
**********
Why do we care so much what these people in Hollywood think, like who you like but don't push it on me! The President of the USA deserves our respect, He is our commander and cheif do you want to live like they do in Iraq or China be glad you have your freedom of everything. Love your family and love your life, don't try to live through some movie star or a singer they are just people like you and me! The dixie chicks really??? I mean can you not see its a publicity stunt to spark their career so go ahead buy into it but i am not going to, there is too much life i want to live! i don't want to spend it fighting with random screen names about stupid issues!
Praise his name
**********
Ok, I agree that the death threats are over the edge. I would never threaten the lives of artists even if I strongly disagreed with their views. The first backlash that the Chicks experienced should have been enough. The right to speak does not automatically assume the right to be heard, or the right not to be offended. I think what we're seeing from the band now is just a tit-for-tat reaction. Stop throwing a fit, girls...just leave it be and go on with your singing. Entertainers have a habit of thinking that just because they can draw a crowd means that the audience wants their opinion on politics, the poor, minorities, etc. No. Most audiences go to a concert to be entertained and escape the world for an hour or two, not to hear some know-nothing spout off about world events.

10. Wow! Love the lyrics. I'm asking for this album for my birthday
next month. If not, I will buy it myself (I would anyway but am mega broke.) This *IS* Lubbock and Natalie's giving them a big F you! I grew up an hour and a half from Lubbock and I only wish I could express my sentiments so eloquently.

Done, now up to 27%.

13. I'm from Houston, and lived here for just a short while, and everything
she says in the song, I can already relate to! Especially the churches (more churches than trees!) and the dust and the 'Christian' hypocrisy. I am not a fan of contry music, but I love everything I've heard them sing. I love the group, and I must admit it started because of their criticism of B*. It had the opposite effect on Lubbock residents!

vote repeatedly, why no notice that the freeper component is skewing as well. No bias at this news outlet I see, lol.

54. Thanks, I hadn't noticed that you can vote more than once! The article
did state that the local music stores had stocked up on the new Dixie Chicks CD...what a farce! They won't play their music, and, according to the poll, they won't buy the CD, the newscasters have been sanctimoniously disparaging about all of this, and YET, they stock their record stores with an oversupply of CDs that they don't expect to sell? Something is not adding up!

Too late to edit my post to reflect that one can vote repeatedly. I'm going to sign on and post a message thanking the FReeper for the great link to DU; not a far left site at all, just one where the truth is discussed!

Poor freepers are very unhappy we can now hold our own against their freeping of the polls, rofl.

Disclaimer: I normally only vote once even when the polls are open to multiple voting, in this one, I voted twice to see if it would take my second vote, sadly, it did which makes it even more meaningless, imo.

I've had it with these right wing fuck wads throwing a shit fit over the Chicks criticizing Bush. Piss on 'em. They talk shit about Clinton to this day, and the man left office 5 years ago. They need to practice what they preach, or shut their god damn fucking mouths. Sorry about the profanity, but this crybaby right wing B.S. about the Dixie Chicks has been going on for way too long. I wish I was a millionaire, I'd buy everything the Chicks have on the market just to ass off the wing nut fuckwads. America is still a free country, despite their best Fascist efforts. And the Chicks have a constitutional right to say any god damn thing they want. And if Repukes have a problem with that, then THEY can god damn leave. America will be a better place without those Neo - Nazi scum suckers.

I'm not usually that foul mouthed, but I'm at the end of my tether with all this whining about the Dixie Chicks. 21. i went to TTU, i feel what she is saying
and there are certainly more churches than trees.

Hell's half acre. thats about appropriate. The city council owns all those alcohol emporiums on the strip, and they wont ever make lubbock wet because they are making a fortune out there on the strip. And they got a whole bunch of cops always watching the I-27, looking for drunks driving the 5 miles home back to their house because they couldn't buy a six pack at the local gas station a block from their house.

i lost all respect for the whole Buddy Holly thing when his wife sold the rights to his name to another company. Before that they had a awesome jam called the Buddy Holly Festival every year in lubbock, and lots of cats would come to play. (chuck berry, etc) Now its just a lame excuse for a bunch of frat boys to get drunk and act disorderly.

34. I am here briefly I hope! Years ago my best friend moved to Lubbock
to go to medical school, and she wrote that they rolled up the sidewalks at 10:oo p.m., and it was a city of churches and dust! I can so relate to hers words now, and to the Dixie Chick's lyrics. They mention the ugly, infamous strip! I'm used to being able to buy good wine in grocery stores, and I was aghast that a city the size of Lubbock didn't sell it. When I ventured out to the strip for wine, I was hit with revulsion! Honestly, it is so ugly, it made me feel like a desperate alcoholic or a prostitute or something, because I had to go there to buy wine! You can't purchase it anywhere else in the city. I'm currently a tee-totaler, because I refuse to drive there. I was told that the most of the real estate here was owned by the former mayor (a major B*/Cheney contributor) and that he not only owned the strip, but most apartment complexes and restaurants...they sell alcohol in restaurants only, and make huge profits. So, it's not about good Christian values that went into the making of the strip, but valuing the good almighty god of profit. So I'm told anyway.

29. Didn't they do the same thing to Janis Joplin?
I think she came from a small town in Texas. After she died, they refused to even admit that she had lived there. She had worldwide fame, but her own hometown would have nothing to do with her.

30. Janis came from Port Arthur.
It's a pretty big town--a refinery town on the Gulf Coast, near the Louisiana border. Far from Lubbock in West Texas. Janis's family always supported her, but Port Arthur answered her rejection of the town with rejection--for a while.

In 1988 some 5,000 people from Port Arthur, tears in their eyes, sang "Me and Bobby McGee" as a bust of Janis Joplin was unveiled. It now sits in a Port Arthur library.

www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/JJ/fjo69.html

Lubbock (like the Golden Triangle of Beaumont/Port Arthur/Orange) has been a fertile source for Texas music. But most musicians leave their little towns in search of fame--for New York, Nashville, San Francisco--or Austin, at least.

The city of Lubbock, however, was somewhat slower to recognize its most famous son. Not until the release of the movie The Buddy Holly Story in 1978 did the city begin to realize the tourism potential of Buddy Holly. In 1979 the city hosted a concert by Jennings and the Crickets to raise funds for a statue of Holly. The 8½-foot-tall bronze, by Grant Speed, was unveiled in 1980, near the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. In 1983 the city turned the area around the statue into a Walk of Fame honoring West Texas musicians.

www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/HH/fhors.html

Quite a few people in all the little towns remember their "stars" with affection.

Music in Texas? This list from the Handbook of Texas includes colleges with music schools, but also quite a few names, places & genres you might know. Or ought to know.

Football is the actual religion here. All that Bible-thumpin' and catterwallerin' about Jesus is just to fill up the time when there's no football.

48. done; but what a stupid question
Are they trying to gauge a reaction to the Chicks "radical" :eyes: views about junior? Because, if so, they should have asked something more along the lines of "Do you agree or disagree with ...." etc.

My intention to buy or not buy their latest release is no indication of the hearty support I have for their outspoken opposition to that POS who is running the country into the ground.

59. I agree, and wondered about the question myself. It's funny though,
as I noted above, that even though this poll reflects that most won't buy their CD (you can vote more than once though, I just found out), the news article on this site stated that local record stores have overstocked the Dixie Chick's new CD! They are anticipating a huge sellout! Doesn't add up, according to this poll result.

49. Those numbers reflect their popularity numbers in Texas...
pretty well. Our own Country station KGKL had a poll of their listeners to see if they wanted the Dixie Chicks ban lifted (no Dixie Chick music had been played since the "incident")and they did not even get a 25% favorable vote.

Texas has been bearing a grudge against them than anywhere else.

64. How funny! Pais is EAST Texas, though, right? And they have
beautiful pine trees, like Houston, with no dust! Having the misfortune to have lived in Lubbock for a short while, I thought that part of their political lunacy came from the ghastly dust and absence of trees! There is minimal beauty here, IMHO.

65. Not quite "beautiful pine trees"
we are culturally East Texas but geographically half East Texas, half North Texas. It's not as pretty as if you drive about 40 miles south or east.

But, yeah, Lubbock sucks. Why anyone would EVER go there is beyond me. Buddy Holly was the only good thing to ever come out of that place. Until now.

101. Hey, no
offense but that is the southwest!!! :)

----------------------------
Typical southwest weather Texas for May.

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ewx/html/wxevent/2006/mayclimate.htm

Cool weather outbreaks are much less common, although a few have been observed.

On May 1, 1907 the high was only 52 at Austin, with the low at 42. On May 6, 1917 the high was 52 at Austin and 56 at San Antonio. The combination of a cool front and rain gave Del Rio an unseasonably cool day May 3, 1918 when the high was 60 and 2.55 inches of rain fell. The lowest overnight low temperatures in May have sometimes come in drought years, like the low of 43 at San Antonio on May 9, 1984, and 45 at Del Rio on May 3, 1970. At the Austin City Climate location the lowest low for May was 40 May 1, 1925, another dry year. Austin Bergstrom's all time May low was 42 May 1, 2005.

In some years when droughts were broken in the summer, some of the warmest days of the year came in May. Although not a drought year, in 2004, the warmest day of the year for San Antonio and Del Rio came May 31. On May 31, 2004 the high was 104 at San Antonio and 107 at Del Rio. The 104 high at San Antonio was a May Monthly Record High. Austin nearly had its warmest day for Year 2004 on May 31, 2004; however, in August 2004 warmer days came at Austin. The high at Austin Mabry May 31, 2004 was 100, later exceed by 101 August 5, 2004, and the high at Austin Bergstrom was 99, later exceed by 100 August 5, 2004. The warmest day in May for the Austin City Climate location came May 24, 1925 when the high was 104, and at Austin Bergstrom 102 May 7, 1998. The warmest day at Del Rio in May came May 24, 2000 when the high was 109. On the other side of extremes for high temperatures, following mostly cloudy and wet winters and springs, some of the first 90 degree days have not come until May. On rare occasions the first 90 degree day has not come until June for Austin and San Antonio. The latest first 90 degree day at Austin was 91 on June 29, 1907 and for San Antonio 91 on June 8, 1885 and 90 on June 8, 1957. The latest first 90 degree day at Del Rio was 91 on May 22, 2004.

May Climate Information...

I'm sorry, but we DO live in the Bible belt, why else is the strip outside of town?! we act like people in lubbock don't drink and we try to hide it... trust me, whoever owns that strip is making a killing!! and the dixie chicks have every right to express that opinion!!! isnt that what our country was founded on... the bill of rights... FREEDOM OF SPEECH PEOPLE!!! I support Natalie and her opinion of the President! people in Lbk act like she is the only one against the President... there are a ton of artists singing anti-war songs!! she isnt the only one that counts when they say Bush's approval rating is at 30%!!! (which is horrible by the way) and the radio stations are simply being immature by banning their music!! come on... yall will play country songs about a "ba-dunk-a-dunk" referring to someone with a big butt.. but yet if someone doensn't like the President, their music is considered bad!! grow up!

My grandparents have lived in Lubbock for over 50 years. My mom and uncle went to Tech. They both moved out as soon as they could. Of course my grandparents are good Southern Baptists. Never drink, smoke, and they would never miss church, you know the deal. My mom and uncle are republican, but are not favorable towards * anymore. I haven't been to Lubbock in years.
