Charlie GIBSON bumps off Elizabeth VARGAS
Edited on Tue May-23-06 09:38 AM by UTUSN
Despite wingnuts thinking GIBSON is "liberal" - I think of two incidents: One, when President CLINTON said, "O.K., let me be very honest with you," GIBSON said, "What were you being before?" He was clearly, purposely?, misreading CLINTON's Southernism, which is that "very honest" means in Southernspeak, to be rude, blunt, hurt-your-feelings.

Another time, on the topic of the 2000 Selection, where a guest complained about the SCotUS intervention, GIBSON said, "Well, they had to do SOMEthing..."

I get this image of GIBSON's having been passed over originally, then evilly lurking just offscreen, bumping off his replacements.

Charles Gibson Named New ABC Anchor

NEW YORK - ABC appointed Charles Gibson as the new anchor of its struggling "World News Tonight" broadcast on Tuesday, replacing Elizabeth Vargas.

Vargas, who is pregnant and goes on maternity leave later this summer, will return in the fall to co-anchor the "20/20" newsmagazine, ABC said.

ABC's announcement did not specify a role for Bob Woodruff, Vargas' co-anchor on the evening news until he was seriously wounded in a roadside bombing in Iraq on Jan. 29. Woodruff is still recovering from serious head injuries and broken bones.

In a news release, Woodruff called Gibson a mentor and friend, and said: "I look forward to contributing to his broadcast as soon as I am able."

5. i wish cbs rejected Katie Couric, bob Scheiffer has done a good job
imo, i thought he'd be a shill for Bush but he's proved me wrong and the segments with Lara Logan are very good, horrifying but good.

she used to work for the Nixon press secretary. Be interesting to see what role she ends up playing..

BTW she also helped Nixon write his memoirs

2. Bumps Off is too rough - Maternity Leave
The term bump off is too rough. She had good ratings as anchor but is going on maternity leave. I imagine she also wants a reduced schedule after she has a baby - she will be on a weekly news magazine vs. a daily news program.

3. How about, punished-for-getting-pregnant?
Actually, she always seemed a lightweight choice to me. Even now, in Googling ABC News or World News Tonight, the links are overwhelmingly about Peter.

anchor. Charlie Gibson or Diane Sawyer is who they should have picked in the first place. I dont' think they could move Diane because she has a huge following in the AM.

Apologies if his head bobbing is due to some neurological disorder but the guy is a lightweight. Fluff.

Piss poor moderator for the last presidential debate(s), too.

10. Slightly off-topic, but please bear with me here...
The only American networks my satellite picks up in England are CNN (International, thank God) and FOX. No ABC. Being American myself though, I'm both familiar with World News Tonight and Charlie Gibson.

Where I'm going off-topic is your anecdote about Clinton and Gibson: President CLINTON said, "O.K., let me be very honest with you," GIBSON said, "What were you being before?" and your mention of Southernspeak.

THANK YOU (yes I'm shouting) for saying this about "Southernspeak". During the entire hounding of Bill Clinton during the run-up to impeachment, I used to tell people in the UK that if someone had just sat down with Ken Starr for a couple of hours and explained Southern idioms (for example, that a lot of southerners don't believe that a BJ is the same as "having sex"), it would have saved the American taxpayers a hell of a lot of money.

Back on-topic now, I'm kind of embarrassed to say I don't know who Elizabeth Vargas is - like I said, I don't have ABC.

13. ABC National News....
Is run on BBC (Channel 2) around 1 or 1:30 each night. NBC News is on CNBC if you have satellite around 11:30 and CBS News may or may not be run on SKY News at 12:30......I say may because sometimes it's on and sometimes it's not....ya just never know.

14. I hate Charlie Gibson ~ recall him thinking GW's "joke"@ WMD

at the Correspondence's Dinner was so funny.

He thought that was soooo funny, he laughed and laughed.

That was so insulting and I will never like him.

ROVE is really getting his folks lined up.

What is the name of the nice looking lady that just married the Bush Aide?

She's another lightweight best suited for celebrity/fashion/cooking segments, imo.

16. When I think of Vargas...
Edited on Tue May-23-06 10:27 AM by Mr_Jefferson_24
...(and that's almost never) I think of the last time I watched her anchor. It was a day or two after Cheney's "Go fuck yourself" remark to Senator Leahy. She was visceral and nasty toward Dem leadership in her effort to rehabilitate Uncle Dick. She had an interview clip from Cheney, amazingly standing behind his remarks rather than apologizing for them, and no interview or comments from Leahy or any other Dems. This is her idea of fair and objective news coverage. I haven't been able to stomach looking at her on anything since.

25. I may actually move back to watch ABC
For years this used to be the network of choice. Then in the past year, even before Jennings had to take off, it started to resemble the 700 Club with too many religious stories so we moved to CBS and I liked Bob Schieffer.

But I was not going to watch "spunky" Couric starting each show pointing to her breasts saying they were real, or pointing to her shapely legs.

Well, maybe she would not, but that image is hard to shake.

I've always liked Charles Gibson even though I stopped watching GMA, too.

So perhaps it will be a nice change.
