24. Unitary Executive and Adam Ciongoli

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

Unitary Executive and Adam Ciongoli
It seems like a conspiracy that the Democrats don't ask Alito, or inform the public, regarding PNAC and the Unitary Executive theory.

This is a link to an extensive history of the theory of the Unitary Executive and its implementation by the Bush administration:

http://www.users.muohio.edu/kelleycs/paper.pdf

Samuel Alito in a 2001 appearance before the conservative Federalist
Society, he said he continued to believe in the idea of the \"unitary
executive.\" That concept holds that the Constitution gives the
president all federal executive power, and means Congress likely could
not grant agency heads powers outside the president\'s reach.

Another "smoking gun" I personally have noticed is Adam Ciongoli. Identified by Sen. Durbin during his 20 min. questioning session as Alito's "Corner Man" with whom Sen. Durbin had a dispute with during one of the breaks at Alito's confirmation hearing. He has been Alito's fiercest supporter and has been featured on all of the major news networks and identified only as a "former Alito Clerk" but he is much more than that. Adam Ciongoli has been described as John Ashcroft's right hand man and was one of the key drafters of the Patriot Act. He also was in charge of handling the flow of information, or lack thereof, to the 9/11 commission.
He is currently general council for Time Warner. He is also a believer in the Unitary Executive theory.

Time Warner owns CNN among other things. Why, oh why is the guy who wrote the Patriot Act working for Time Warner.

Another thing I want to mention that they ask these Judges about their "Judicial Philosophy" but during the Presidential election no one asked Bush about his "Presidential Philosophy" (Unitary Executive Power)

Well that's a different topic all together.

......................................................................

i was so upset after reading this last night ..i couldn't sleep...and i was pretty angry when i spoke to Senator Bidens phone answerer...

he refered me to todays NYT and said it said it is possible that none of the 9 Senators will vote <for> alito

but he did tell me i should be contacting Senator Nelson of Nebraska..

that he could be the lone dem voting <for> Alito..

please please please....

may i ask each and every Du'er to get on the phone and make a call to Nelson of Nebraskas office...and demand he not vote for Alito...

ask your blogs to CaLL AND WRITE..ASK YOUR family members, ASK YOUR FRIENDS..LETS flood this man with calls and letter, emails..faxes...

we must hold Nelson of Nebraska accountable..

please no excuses ..get on those phones to Nelson's office...we must light a fire under Nelson..now!!

thank you for listening...

as a flight crew with one of the Airlines of 9/11 i can not sit back and see this man confirmed into my Supreme Court...and to see who was the gatekeeper of any meaningful invetigation of 9/11 and the info that was made available..this is just dispicable to me..as it should be to all of you...

the truth of 9/11 may never be known..and the gatekeeper and Alito will be partially responsible for that...think about it when you take your shoes off at the airport next time you fly!
or when you are put on the "no fly list" because of your political alignments ..

If Nelson is the lone Dem to vote for Alito (no surprise there), then doesn't that mean the Dems have more than enough votes to filibuster?

4. YES! They only need 41 and
Chaffee, Snowe and Collins (R) may join the Dems. We have MORE than enough for a filibuster. :)

27. Snowe has already indicated she will not join the Dems.
See this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x184949

The chances of a Democratic filibuster faded after the third day of hearings, as a spokeswoman for Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine, a moderate Republican, announced that Ms. Snowe would oppose it. Her decision is pivotal because she was one of seven Republicans who had joined an earlier successful effort to block Republican leaders from changing Senate rules to prevent filibusters against judicial nominations...."

6. oh, and Fly...
As a former airline executive who saw my industry destroyed (in some ways, it was self-destruction, but you probably understand that as I do) I am fully with you on getting to the truth of 9/11. We owe it not only to our fellow workers who died on that day but to make air travel safe again (which it still isn't, in many ways).

16. thank you Neecy for your comments...and you know full well as i do
the danger in not standing up now...we must all put voice to this...

to think Alito's corner guy was the gate keeper in this white house to the flow of docmuments and info on 9/11 just catches in my throat and gut...

and to think this man now sits in a position of our media..our 4th estate...

what does the contitution mean anymore??

i took early retirement from my airline ..not because of fear of terrorists..but fear of my own government...

its time Americans wake the hell up..

and get off our butts and be "we the people"

and demand from the people ,we sent to washington in our name , that they represent us as we deem ..not as they feel will get them re-elected...

they are our employees..its about time we act like employers!!

do it our way or get out of the way..

or we will get you out of the way..we must hold them accountable..immediately with our voices loud and strong!

31. I know this is an aside
but thank you for acknowledging it.

I get so burned up every time I go through security at the airport (which I do about monthly so it is an ongoing festering anger) not because it delays me and is irritating but because it is so blatently a dog and pony show for us, the sheeple. It's really hard not to glower at the security folk but I keep myself in check because I doubt they understand really just how much they are tools of our government.

With very minor exceptions, I am no more nor less safe getting on that airplane as I was on 9/10/2001. I'm amazed that so few realize that.

I would almost be happier if they would just say, "Look, it's damn near impossible to keep you any safer while travelling by airplane and besides we don't really care to try. Have a nice flight!". I guess what I'm saying is if I'm not going to receive any real protection, could I please receive just a little real honesty?

Okay, rant over.

14. If Nelson is the only dem that votes for him, they CAN filibuster

They only need 41 votes to filibuster. Their opposition must be expressed through a filibuster to have ANY meaning. If they simply vote no, it is useless and they might as well vote yes.

I have had it. The dems lie down on this - I am LEAVING the party. I will throw my support and efforts to progressive groups.

23. Kicked and recommended.
This is it, boys and girls. If we can't get these people to fire the opening salvo (politically speaking, of course - a bow to the unavoidable lurking freepers and illegal gov't spies, with their fingers and flashlights, poking into our body orfices) and bend in the direction of getting them the hell out of our lives, then they will never listen to us. And we are the majority of the world.

This is a most wonderful day.

28. Contacting Nelson
can't hurt, of course. But, in my opinion as a native born & bred Nebraskan (no longer there now for years), Ben the DINO will bow to his base on this one--and his base are Bible-spouting fundies. Remember, NE is one of the only 6 or 7 states with Bush still above 50% approval. SG

36. True, but just barely
(it's by less than 10 points, and falling) and it might be beneficial to point that out to Nelson. He might want to jump off the Bush bandwagon before it crashes.

btw, I'm also a born & bred Nebraskan, living in California. But I was back in NE for the holidays and the tone is far different than it was even a few months ago. The Bible-spouting fundies are a lot quieter. A convo that used to lead to vicious shouting now ends with the fundie mumbling some Bush rhetoric and slowly walking away. They may still SAY they support Bush, but they're doing so with far less intensity.

29. Ciongoli is a right wing zealot
I know Adam Ciongoli very well. He's from Burlington, Vermont and is as conservative and rightwing as they come. He was the primary architect of the administration of the Justice Department under Ashcroft. I knew Ciongoli as a little kid who use to talk about his admiration for Pat Buchanan and Ronald Reagan when he was about eight years old. If he'a an Alito "handler" than it really confirms that Alito must be much more of a conservative zealot than I had imagined.

30. Bad news in CT too...
Ranting and raving at them all week, I learned from both Senators Dodd and Lieberman's office (surprise!) that neither of them have made a decision. And Lieberman's aide mentioned that "the senator is waiting for all the hearings to be over." It's sad when you have to inform an aide that the hearings are OVER!

I know everyone is running at warp speed but I would so appreciate it if you could all take a moment and "help" them make up their minds. I'm including both 800 numbers below but I do think their DC numbers are probably best. Besides, the DC number for Lieberman will at least give you a laugh as DINO himself answers the voicemail.

Thanks, everyone...Mary
