JEWEL is a right-winger? (backing conrad burns)
Montana's Burns gets set for tough race

By Gwen Florio, USA TODAY
Wed May 31, 7:23 AM ET

oh, well her music sucks anyway. and she's washed-up. i'm just surprised because she always spouted pseudo-feminist talk when she was doing the whole lilith fair thing
---
(from usa today)
U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns (news, bio, voting record) showed up at the recent Bucking Horse Sale here with some rodeo bona fides ?s champion bull rider Ty Murray and his pop-star girlfriend, Jewel.

The applause that followed Burns and his celebrity supporters as they passed, in a single block, the Montana Bar, the Bison Bar, the Trail's Inn Bar and the Range Riders Bar and Casino, was balm to a battered campaign.

Burns' grip on the Senate seat he has held for three terms seems as precarious as a cowboy's spot atop one of the rank broncs at the annual Bucking Horse rodeo, a campaign stop for candidates facing the June 6 primary.

"Burns is about as vulnerable as incumbents get," said Jennifer Duffy, who handicaps Senate races for the non-partisan Cook Political Report.

Just mentioning that because I don't think you'll find a lot of it here.

that's why i was surprised to see this article.
but, yeah, her music sucked. i think she tried to have a commercial comeback by cheesecaking-it-up last year, but it failed miserably

8. Well, IMO her music doesn't suck
And she has been supportive of our causes. She supported Gore, and I saw her on TV supporting Kerry. I think she was there only for the rodeo part.

I was very happy she wasn't playing at the Lilith Fair I went to. Of course, we did have Mya tap dancing for almost her whole fucking set.

but her song Life Uncommon is, IMO, really really lovely...
I found the words ..neutral in terms of seeking peace etc..
in the world. Oh well, I do like her voice.

Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 12:35 AM by mvd
It makes her music more interesting. She's not one of my absolute favorite artists, but 0304 is the only album I didn't care for. "America," which is on 0304, definitely slams Bush. She's spoken out as a Democrat, and I doubt now that she'd change. As I said, I just think she put politics aside to have some fun with her husband.

13. Who knows
She sure has told a lot of stories of personal hardship. I have no idea if they were true or not, but her story about living in New Orleans was BS... unless she was in her car for a week in a parking lot. I never saw her perform in any of the clubs or coffee houses where I played. LOTS of musicians claim to have 'played in New Orleans,' as if they lived here for years and became one of us. :eyes: I have seen countless of 'Jewels' perform here, but she wasn't one of 'em.

23. Yeah- that was weird, wasn't it?
I actually kind of liked her first album, and while I can't say that the whole 'skimpy clothes/firehose' thing wasn't... umm... entertaining... it's about 180 degrees from where she started. You don't usually see musicians devolve like that- at least not that hard and that fast.

19. she must have money problems. she was on a soap opera this afternoon
I sometimes listen to the audio from the CBS station in my car and this afternoon I heard her sing on some soap opera -- she was the guest singer at some banquet honoring a dead character

Sounds like she's taking any gig she can get

22. She totally "changed her image" a few years back.
Decided she wanted to put on a bunch of make-up, get some dancers, and play in front of a synthesizer.

She turned into a whole lot of pop bullshit.

I was actually floored when I saw it the first time. She's one of the worst artistic sellouts I've ever seen.

Goodbye Alice In Wonderland is the title. I like pop, but it just wasn't for Jewel.

27. Jewel - bah....
Totally dissed Alaska after she left here. Got introduced as "San Diego's own" or some such at the Super Bowl or whatever. Cancelled a New Year's Eve show here just days before so she could hang with Neil Young or something. I think she probably started out as a sweet Homer country girl and let fame go to her head. I don't have much use for her.

29. You think THAT's Bad..
I have the JEWEL Taylor guitar.. signed by her Little Tiny hand :) (and I got her beat, lived in Alaska for 10 years, gold mined, looked for Uranium by Chopper for two summers in ANWR, 18 hours a day, even crashed.. ain't no CHEECHAKO here..)

It's too bad because it's one of the best inexpensive guitars Taylor ever made.. gets 10s all the time..

Oh well, just have to use it to make ANTI WAR Music :)

33. Not happy with the pickup in it
tho I suspect it's a Fishburn, love to have the latest sound install, guess I could send it to the factory and get them to do it.. it has the sound and feel of a much more expensive guitar, and frankly some of the other Taylors costing much more don't come near it..

My wife looked this particular model up online and it seems that it scores 10s all around, just finding that 'sweet spot' with the mic should work..

I love the Taylors, after playing for 30 years I'd never have another acoustic

Sure would be fun to create a DU 'band', wouldn't it? Have a round robin recording session, one person plays a part and sends the song on to the next DU musician until the song is complete.. just picked up a set of Roland V-Drums and THAT is FUN as well..

Too bad about Jewel, had the feeling she was a sell out.. love to take her place, and USE HER guitar to do it :)
