1. The problem is...
"Ethics and values" are at direct odds with everything a soldier is supposed to be.

men I ever knew.

I don't agree with your statement.

Added: I intended to edit my "What" and not reply to it, but you get my point, I'm sure.

11. Look at the training
The problem is in how soldiers are trained: Follow orders immediately and without question. Be agressive, be tough, kill without compunction or remorse or regret. People who are not on themselves on the front line are trained -- brainwashed, essentially -- not to think of where those missiles they launch will land, not to consider the "collateral damage" that will be caused by the bombs they are inspecting / transporting / piloting / releasing.

While training to murder other people on command, directly or indirectly, may be necessary, I do not and can not and will never consider it to be ethical or a reflection of positive values.

5. This is a smokescreen that's not going to work. If troops
don't possess ethics and values by now, there's no hope, especially not a course to learn all about it.

6. There's not much point as long as the team at the top
has no respect for ethics and values.

7. The US culture needs more ethics and values
Troops are only a reflection of the culture.

8. Ethics
In the Marine Corps, our ethos is Honor, Courage and Commitment. Everything we do as Marines must adhear to those three words. The quickest way to get kicked out of the Corps is to run afoul of our ethos. I know combat by its very nature can contradict being honorable, having courage and being commited to doing whats right.

We as Marines have these virtues ingrained in our heads from day one. But if the feel we need more training, then I personally will embrace it.

9. Their COMMANDERS do.
Soldiers are fucked either way - if they obey orders, they're bad people, if they refuse, they face court martial.

10. Soldiers already get this stuff out the ying yang.
We have Consideration of Others (COO), Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH), sensitivity, and rules of war training. In fact, this training takes up a considerable number of yearly training days.
