If YOU FEEL POWERLESS, LISTEN TO DIXIE CHICKS. DU's NOT READY TO MAKE NICE
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 09:31 AM by Jeffersons Ghost
By now most people at DU have heard their song, Not Ready to Make Nice but are you listening with your heart? Do you hear a rich tradition of protest music that dates to at least to the Peasants Revolt of 1381? Do you hear a voice that modern aristocracy thought they could silence by buying up ALL the media? It appears the aristocracy has failed again, because the Dixie Chicks are the best-selling female group of all time. Anyone who has ever owned a radio station will tell you it's tough to show a profit in that business, so happy trails rich kids: You just bought an outdated lemon called radio. The internet sells the songs today.

here's a blog from someone who saw their show:

Coleen Rowley Wed May 31, 3:03 PM ET

A few weeks ago, at an event hosted by Time magazine, I had the amazing good fortune to have a front-row seat to hear the Dixie Chicks belt out a couple of their new ballads. I was close enough to see and almost feel the lightning-like defiance flash in their eyes as Natalie Maines sang:

"I'm not ready to make nice

I'm not ready to back down

I'm still mad as hell and

I don't have time to go round and round and round"

Their song immediately reverberated with the audience, as nothing but a bold proclamation of truth can do. Time sent us all home with a sampler CD of the Chicks' new songs, which I've found myself popping into my karaoke machine from time to time on the campaign trail when the deceit and dishonesty of our current leaders gets me down. In 2002, Cynthia Cooper (Worldcom auditor), Sherron Watkins (Enron officer) and I (FBI legal counsel) were considered exceptional for speaking truth with power. It's amazing that simple insistence on the truth is considered extraordinary, but as George Orwell noted, "When deceit becomes universal, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act."

3. ROCK ON DU... WE WERE NEVER READY TO BACK DOWN. thanks for the kick Sydnie
Forgive, sounds good.
Forget, I'm not sure I could.
They say time heals everything,
But I'm still waiting

I'm through, with doubt,
There's nothing left for me to figure out,
I've paid a price, and i'll keep paying

I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

I know you said
Why can't you just get over it,
It turned my whole world around
and i kind of like it

I made by bed, and I sleep like a baby,
With no regrets and I don't mind saying,
It's a sad sad story
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.
And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Saying that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

Forgive, sounds good.
Forget, I'm not sure I could.
They say time heals everything,
But I'm still waiting

40. No problem & yes I have the lyrics
If I have to claim Toby Keith I'm damn sure claiming Leon Russell! :)

Ballad For a Soldier

When I was just a young boy,
I played with swords and guns,
and I dreamed of the day
I`d become a soldier.
And kill all of the enemy,
my country`tis of thee.
I sing this anthem sadly,
won`t you hear me.

I watched the cannons blazing,
on the giant silver screen.
The swastikas were burning
and the hero was me.
The general gave the order,
gladly I obeyed.
But the movie faded quickly
all at once today.
And now I stand alone
with the charges made,
no where to run,
not a place to hide.

We`re sad little children
playing grown-up games.
Guess the time has come,
the damage has been done.

Stray dogs that live on the highway,
walk on three legs.
Cause they learn too slow
to get the message.
Just like the indians
in the early days.
Battles lost and won,
yet it still goes on.
It`s just another ballad for soldier.

I had no understanding
`till I saw my mother cry,
when they told how many babies
I had killed that night.
A dozen color photographs
inside of a magazine,
told the morbid story
like a movie screen.
But I was not the hero
I thought myself to be,
movies are much different than reality.

The general was convicted
to get off of the hook,
but the President might free me
for the chance I took.
And we all stand alone
when the charge is made,
sad way to live,
what a way to die.

We`re all little children
playing grown-up games,
can we burn the gun
before the next time comes.

Stray dogs that live on the highway
walk on three legs,
they move too slow to get the message.
Give up and win,
that`s all I have to say,
we have`t really won
till all the fightin` done,
and there are no more ballads for the soldiers.

Fuck prosecuting a few marines and sentencing Lt Cally to three years. Who covered it up... do you mean to say that I knew more than the president and secretary of defense a few months ago?

17. And there are more references to it in other songs. LOVE THE CD!!!
Please consider buying it! It's reasonably priced at places like Barnes & Noble, AND it's wonderful!!

They've got Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty's band on there, John Mayer does some guitar, and Keb Mo sings on one song. You have to read the lyrics, there are some unbelievable songs, and plenty of comments in other songs about their trashing by the country music industry.

I read an article that mentioned their album, based on SALES not RADIO PLAYS, was #1 in pop and country. The country music "programmers" said.. 'we played it a few times but did not add it to our playlist'. They're the idiots that removed the #1 country act from their playlists. The AMC awards seemed so ridiculous without them.... And.. the Dixie Chicks album outsold the "nemisis" Toby Keith (AP used the term "nemisis". My husband was at Toby keith's concert (for business purposes only), and he had giant graphics behind him flashing on stage.. with Dixie Chicks photo shopped with Osama Bin Laden. I'm so glad to see that they're kicking his ass.

Personally, I buy NOTHING at Wal-Mart. If it was my money, I'd pick it up at a Barnes and Noble or a local Mom & Pop-type store or online -- but, since the little ol' person I'm taking is the one with the cash, they get to decide where they want to go. (I just follow along and do my best to hold their purchases to an absolute minimum. :-) )

this morning, I wrote an OP that got NO COMMENTS OR VOTES. You can't win them all. hang in there. It's a numbers game some days. Your thread also gave some of the newer people a chance to learn why media now fails America to such a large degree these days. While Clear-Channel is currently focusing on buying up all the outdoor (billboards) it can lay it's grubby paws on, TV is another media the company is keen on acquiring.

I know what it's like to be told to my face
that I should "be hung from a tree as traitor"

Swerved at , flipped off ,cut off, screamed at , Mocked
with the "L" sign ...I've received hate mail for
my LTTE's . I've had Spit on my windshield , fog lamps
kicked out . Yard signs Stolen key scratches on my
car windows . I've gone through a Tire and had an exhaust
pipe kicked loose. All since 2001 .

I'll never Back Down , not ready to make nice
either . The first 5 times I heard the song I
cried . It's My song and it's awfully nice to
know that someone else out there knows what I've
been going through .

49. I fished that Time magazine from the trash can at my Docs office today
I happened to sit next to a waste paper basket , while sitting at a doctors office today. I saw the new Time magazine with them on the cover in that basket. I pulled it out and said "some idiot threw this away." A man sitting across from me said they have been vindicated . I agreed and said Ive known that all along. I put the Time back on the table before I left/

Ive always liked their music and I will be buying a copy of their CD this weekend. I recommend we all do it.

52. What state do you live in Ksec? Hatred appears rampant in
certain parts of Texas, but it must be more widespread than I had thought!

I agree; they have been vindicated!
