Doing the math in Iran
http://www.thespectrum.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060603/OPINION02/606030319/1014

The talking heads on the news channels seemed stunned at the announcement that the United States has agreed to meet, face-to-face, with Iran over its nuclear program if it first agrees to put its development programs on the shelf.

What happened, quite simply, is somebody walked into the Oval Office, tapped the president on the shoulder and offered him the simple math: one plus zero equals a coalition of one.

It wouldn't look good for the United States to become the aggressor once again in another war it simply could not win.

Russia and China have pushed the White House to back down on its saber rattling. So has the European community, which has had about enough of this mess in Iraq and certainly is not interested in signing on for another tour of duty in Iran.

With U.S. troops spread thin in Iraq and even thinner once they begin deployment along the Mexican border, who would be in the on-deck circle, ready to march into Iran?

The only answer, of course, would be to re-institute the draft to continue the war on terror, which won't happen because then the approval ratings for our involvement over there would sink even lower. Besides, opposition would be as strong, if not stronger, than what occurred during the Vietnam War.

1. US ultimatum is safe- bush knows Iran will not go along
iran has to give up something, the US gives up nothing except threats of war.

2. No draft is possible at this time.
No way would a population that contains 79% who are unhappy with the current prezidnut tolerate a draft. There would be wholesale movements to secede if people thought little Josh and Caitlin were going to be conscripted. The only thing that this misadministration can do is redploy the military they already have--i.e., pull them out of Iraq and span them across Afghanistan-Iran, if they plan to go on in that horrible direction.

4. Madness
The Bush crowd doesn't think that an invasion force is needed. We will bomb Iran, and the Iranians will rise up against their leaders!

Slam-dunk!
