What happened, quite simply, is somebody walked into the Oval Office, tapped the president on the shoulder and offered him the simple math: one plus zero equals a coalition of one.
It wouldn't look good for the United States to become the aggressor once again in another war it simply could not win.
Russia and China have pushed the White House to back down on its saber rattling. So has the European community, which has had about enough of this mess in Iraq and certainly is not interested in signing on for another tour of duty in Iran.
With U.S. troops spread thin in Iraq and even thinner once they begin deployment along the Mexican border, who would be in the on-deck circle, ready to march into Iran?
The only answer, of course, would be to re-institute the draft to continue the war on terror, which won't happen because then the approval ratings for our involvement over there would sink even lower. Besides, opposition would be as strong, if not stronger, than what occurred during the Vietnam War.
