9. Welcome to DU riverrine! Glad you're here. This is all pretty wierd at fir
first, but keep reading and you'll start to understand the constant sarcasm: It's not usually directed at other DU'ers. It's our theatrics because we're so fed up with this white house.

Great question. You've come to the right place.

These people have followed history in amazing detail for years, and will have the honest answer to the stuff that this so-called government spews that doesn't add up.

Everytime what they say doesn't match what they do, it's not you. It's them.

Welcome to DU! Glad you found us!

5. You know mycritters is kidding, right? If you're new, please realize we gi
give each other the GOP party line all the time as a way to make fun of them.

As far as your question goes, this is more of the B*** scare tactics. The one-liners that his presidency is based on. Of course the world would allow them to enrich uranium up to the level needed for power plants. But it makes a better headline in kentucky to say that we can't allow them any at all.

Most people refuse to follow the subtler details of these issues, and that's exactly how the GOP likes it.

14. Welcome to DU! An EXCELLENT question that more people
should be asking.

The Neo-Con line is that they will use their nuclear capabilities to create weapons.

They only recently were able to refine uranium to 18% which is fine for energy production and they were very proud of that acheivement.

However, to be weapons grade uranium must be refined to 90%. If they only now were able to get 18%, how long will it take them to get 90%? Experts estimate at least 10 years. So, why all the sabre-rattling now? Why not diplomacy?

Here's another little tidbit. When Valerie Plame was outed, she was undercover gathering intelligence on the sale of black market weapons and nuclear material. One of the countries whe was monitoring - Iran!

So, your question is one all of us should be asking the current administration.

If you really want answers, go here:
http://www.newamericancentury.org/

Or read a summary by DU's own William Pitt here:
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article1665.htm

Everything will become clear.

21. Thank you for your service. Proud to have a vet on board.
My Dad's probably around your age and this administration has broken his republican heart. I told him before the election that this time, if he wanted to vote for the conservative, he'd have to vote for Kerry, because Bush is just a neo-con war monger.

As you read this site, you'll see that "we" pretty much agree that the people currently in power are not regular Reagan republicans like my Dad. They're neo-cons. That's not the same.

I'll guess you're usually proud of McCain, and some people on here would aggree with you. He's not a neo-con. He's the old school conservative. "We" here on DU know the difference.

My Dad voted for Kerry the second time, but promised me not to tell my sisters! It was only because of this site that I had the understanding of the neo-con war agenda to explain to him that Bush is no conservative.

So, please don't think all the anger you read on here is aimed at conservatives. Most of it these days is about the current neo-coms who want eternal war, eternal killing, and want the whole world to fear and hate us.

In my opinion, your generation always caused the world to appreciate the US. We went to war when it was the right thing to do. But not this bunch.

So, keep reading, and keep asking. It's painful to see our country so messed up. We're here because we care and appreciate your service and patriotism.

:patriot:

20. It Should Be A UN Issue, and an IAEA Issue
and not just an American issue.

The reason that we shouldn't want them to have nuclear weapons is clear.

The reason we have no trust in the Iranians to not develop nuclear weapons is less clear, but relates to such comments from their leader as wanting to wipe Israel off the map.

I am not sure whether you were referring to energy or weapons, or both.

We are not the only country to use nuclear energy by far, so I assume you are talking about weapons.

I don't want any other country to have nukes. I wish we didn't have them. The presence of nukes anywhere brings us one step closer to global destruction.

As for energy, I think they have a right to that but maybe they shouldn't have the right to enrich uranium, and instead should buy enriched uranium for their plants and have them monitored carefully by the IAEA. In fact, maybe all countries should cease enrichment of uranium and have an island somewhere begin enriching uranium for all the world for use in energy only.

Of course these aren't happening, and won't happen.

Back to Iran and nuclear weapons, one has to ask themselves, do we want another nuclear power in the world, especially in the M.E. as it is a hotbed waiting to explode. (Many thanks to GWB and previous administrations for policies that have inflamed the ire of many of these nations)

27. Put the house and senate in democratic hands to stop the wars.
Once we have majorities, we can call hearings, subpoenas, and hold trials. We can demand evidence and stop the corporate takeover of the country. But the GOP won't let go until we trounce them in '06 and '08.

Oh, yeah: We have to demand that the main stream media be allowed to report on the truth of our government. Right now, it's being controlled by Bush.

...to be sure of 'hitting your target'. The corporations already have control and even if they allowed a Democrat to be president, it wouldn't be as if you were getting a grass-roots, populist reformer now , would it??

The best you can do right now is take back control of your election process. Good luck

31. Whether they get it or not is besides the point.
The reason it is any issue at all is because attacking Iraq is next on the NeoCon/PNAC agenda. They don't give a darn about Iran and nukes. All they care about is that it is an issue they can use to drive us into another battle to annex yet another nation.

If they couldn't use nukes as the excuse, they'd use chemical WMDs. If not that, then drugs. Or Human rights. Or regional destabilization. etc...

Nukes are their excuse. Domination via War is the reason.

34. Iran is NOT about nukes . . . never was, never will be . . .
Iran is about oil -- just like Iraq -- and about extending American hegemony in the region . . .

nukes is just a fabricated BuscCo excuse to invade another country sitting on a sea of oil . . .
