"I hearby resign from the White Race"
Great Post at Conceptualguerilla.com

(snip)

Every once in a while, when you find yourself up against what seems to be an insurmountable obstacle, you have one of those moments of clarity. In that moment, you understand exactly what the problem is, and more importantly exactly what to do about it. In this case, the problem is bigotry, and more particularly Republican efforts to mine bigorty for votes. The present "southwestern strategy" is just the latest version of the "southern strategy." It is a shameless effort to induce "white" people to vote for corporate shills on the basis of race and "culture," instead of voting for their real interests. Here is my simple solution.

I hereby resign from the so-called "white" race.

I resigned too.....

1. Or as Frank Zappa said:
"I'm not Black, but there's a whole lot of times I wish I could say I'n not White"

I have to fight back the urge to constantly apologize for the horrors we've caused.

5. You don't have to resign but you should make your
fight against bigotry well known to your fellow white Americans. It's far more effective than a minority pointing the obvious facts to them when it comes from their own peer group.

Once people realize that the GOP have been playing them for fools with race baiting, then maybe we can get back to the business of making this country the greatest again because it sure isn't anymore thanks to the criminal idiots they have elected into office.

11. Yes, change can happen a lot more rapidly from within this peer group.
Bigots must be shamed out of existence by their own kind or else the cycle of hatred will continue.

12. What Cleita said.
While that would be admirable and appreciated, I think it's easier and safer for some whites to throw up their hands and say "I want no part of that," than to risk sacrifice and actually vocally stand and march in solidarity with people of color, else they may suffer true repercussions, professionally and personally. Who knows, they may have very good reasons for choosing to not make that kind of sacrifice, and I can respect that. That's the beauty of white privilege. But for those who bravely choose to be more than just vocal, they need to make sure they count the cost.

6. Except that it wasn't racism that finally worked in the South.
It was the fact that Southerners believe that all Democrats are like New England Liberal-stereotypes and look down on them.

It's not really about race or culture or God, gays and guns: it's simply that Southerners grew weary of people from up north, whom they view as liberal Democrats (whether they are or not), cracking jokes about their culture, looking down their nose at them and treating them like red-headed step-children.

The Republicans have done a fantastic job making Southern people think they really care about what Southern people think.

14. So you don't consider looking down on New England
liberal sterotypes as not being racist? I do. You don't have to be a different color of skin for racism or ethnic bias to be present.

I have to admit that I have a bias against white southerners, which I have to work on every day so I don't make decisions about them based on that factor. I have to tell myself that each individual I meet with that accent and big hair have to be judged as individuals not lumped into a group painted over with a big brush.

18. Hardly - I'm married to a New England liberal.
My point is that Republicans used Southerners' hatred for the New England/Hollywood stereotype against Southerners to gain a foothold.

Are Southerners more biased against New Englanders? Probably now, but that wasn't always the case. It's been a recent development, spurred by Republican efforts to make themselves sound as though they care about "Southern" issues.

Yes - there are and have always been jokes about "Yankees" and "Rebels," but I'm not speaking to the harmless little jokes that really didn't translate into real life.

And, I'm sorry you're biased against me. That's very sad considering I've never done a thing to make you dislike me. And I don't have big hair (where the HELL did that come from, anyway. That's a stupid assessment of Southern people, really).

"And, I'm sorry you're biased against me. That's very sad considering I've never done a thing to make you dislike me."

That's exactly what I mean. You didn't do anything to me for me to feel that way, so I have to fight it every inch of the way. Sorry about the big hair remark. It was a little joke about how southern women can be stereotyped. I think for guys it's wearing a mullet or something like that.

Incidentally, my father was from Arkansas and I think I learned to distrust southerners from my own family. I'm half Latina myself and I identify myself as such because I'm closer in spirit to the Latino culture of dancing and music than the white southern culture of football and bibles.

But there is something about that southern accent and what people are wearing, like American flag outfits, that set my guards up. I'm glad I don't give into it or I wouldn't have ever voted for Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton, or Al Gore, and I would have missed out on many good friendships.

On edit: BTW don't make me regret admitting my biases. It's very hard for someone like me who preaches about bigotry and racism in our lives to have to admit that I have them. However, we all have bigotries and racism deep inside of us. We have to admit them, look at them and try to fight them, instead of saying, "I'm not that way, but you are."

7. Not Me.
Since I don't engage in bigotry, I see no reason to be ashamed of being white. I'm just me. If I resigned from the white race I would be declaring that just by being white it includes me in some generic group that acts a certain way and does things certain ways, and engages in hate, bigotry and discrimination. But that would be bullshit. The overwhelming majority of whites I know do not engage in such behavior, and the select few bigots that do can kiss my ass anyway. So if I resigned from the 'white race' due to such reasons, I'd then be a bigot and racist myself for lumping all whites into a generic group that should be ashamed of themselves. But sorry, I'm not going to be a bigot or racist towards anyone, white or not.

9. Fuck that
I was born this way and there is nothing I can do about it. I refuse to be a self-hating white male just because there are some people who are assholes.

I am not a bigot, I never owned a slave, I didn't steal land from any native Americans, I never gassed a race of people, I don't make the decision on what women do with their bodies, I don't hold anyone back from getting more pay for their jobs and I am not a republican.

10. King Georg's stance on illegals is not fooling anyone
King George wants to keep the illegals flowing so his corporate buddies can keep abusing them and make billions.

The Democratic party has aligned themselves with the crazy king. I knew if there was a way for the Democratic party to shoot themselves in the foot they would find it.

Sure there are some bigots who are afraid of those dark skinned people flooding our borders, but the majority of people are for controlling the borders in order to increase security. They don't care what color skin they have not matter how much Limpball and Ann the man harp on racist fears. The citizenry has more intelligence than you give them credit for. The Democratic party has got to stop aligning themselves with bush on the illegal immigration issue or we will end up with another repuke controlled congress next year.

16. Please read the article berfore jumping to conclusions...
about self hating and such.

Caucasian and "white" aren't the same thing. His point is that the concept of "whiteness" and the supposed value of it is an artificial construction....a construction that was used to manipulate and enslave.

17. Exactly
It sounds like some here have reacted in a knee-jerk fashion and haven't read the whole article.

It was an excellent read.

I'm afraid the author is going to have an uphill climb, getting others to sign up, though.
