Help the New Orleans Public Library

Do you have a few good books gathering dust?

The New Orleans Public Library is asking for any and all hardcover and paperback books to restock the shelves after Katrina.

The books can be sent to:

Rica A. Trigs, Public Relations
New Orleans Public Library
219 Loyola Avenue
New Orleans, LA 70112-2007

I've also heard that the post office will offer a discounted rate to ship items to this address.

3. Check out Snopes on this one.

Does the library accept book donations?

Yes. However, due to storage and staff limitations, we ask that donors consider a few suggestions:

If you are a publisher, please contact us in advance at wmascari@gno.lib.la.us before shipping large quantities of books.

If you are an individual sending your own used books, please consider making a cash donation instead.
As the NOPL states:
What is the best way to help New Orleans Public Library?

Monetary donations are the best way to help the library rebuild (link here to donate online). If you would rather mail your donation, please make your check payable to NOPL Foundation and send it to New Orleans Public Library Foundation, 219 Loyola Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70112.

8. someone at DU suggested holding a used book sale ...
... and sending the proceeds to the New Orleans library (and other affected public libraries, like Gulfport and Biloxi). Something to try, in one's neighborhood or workplace?

"any and all" hardcover/paperback books?

that doesn't sound like a very good system for getting a library up and running...just because a book is published/printed, doesn't mean that it's worthy of being in a libraries collection...lots of books do become obsolete and worthless- they'd just be wasting space- and the time to sift and sort thru them all...i would think that money donations, or books from qualified institutions and/or individuals(i.e. other libraries, publishers, dealers, estates, etc..) would be the prferred method.

just putting out a general call for any and all books will probably get you a lot of crap- after all, how many copies of the "left behind' series does one library really need? even in the south...
