WASHINGTON, June 13 /Christian Newswire/ -- Concerned Women for America’s (CWA’s) Director of Government Relations Lanier Swann will join other conservative leaders in speaking at a press conference tomorrow in support of Sen. Jon Kyle’s (R-Arizona) and Rep. Todd Akin’s (R-Missouri) Pledge Protection Act. This legislation would ensure the protection of the phrase “under God” in the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. The press conference will be held on Flag Day, which marks the day in 1777 when John Adams proposed the stars and stripes as the official United States flag.

Swann said, “As Americans commemorate Flag Day, it is also appropriate to remember the importance of keeping God in our Pledge. CWA strongly supports the mention of God in our nation’s oath in keeping with our constitutional freedoms. We are free from an established religion and free to worship as we choose. Our country’s founding fathers were men of faith who intentionally included the phrase ‘under God’ in an oath that serves as a symbol of loyalty and patriotism to our great country.

The Pledge Protection Act would uphold and protect the sanctity of our age-old Pledge. Children across the country must continue to have the right to recite our Pledge day in and day out. The words ‘under God’ make the Pledge not only a patriotic oath, but a public prayer for our country,” concluded Swann.

What: Pledge Protection Act & Flag Day Press Conference

When: Wednesday, June 14, 2006, 12:30 PM

Where: Senate “Swamp,” Upper Senate Park, across from Russell Senate Building, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

*The media and public are welcome to attend this free-of-charge event.

2. this would actually be one of my top election year issues except...
...that I'm not concerned. Or a woman. And I don't give a rat's buttocks about the pledge. Sigh-- maybe that's why concerned women don't want to hang with me....

4. In 1954, Congress added the words "under God"

knee-jerk reaction to McCarthy and the threat from "godless communism"

6. Our "age-old" pledge? Whatta buncha maroons.
The pledge was written in 1892, and the "under God" part wasn't added until 1954. Hardly "age-old."

9. "Age-old Pledge"
The Pledge, if I remember right, was written in 1892, making it about 114 years old. Hardly 'age-old.' America isn't even 'age-old.' These idiots are just trying to attach the legitimacy of great tradition to something that's newer than my coffee table. Go tell the Egyptians and Chinese how 'age-old' your Pledge is.

12. And how much will this bullshit legislation cost even to be considered
and discussed? What a waste of time and money. Even if I held supernatural beliefs -- as in a god -- I'd be suspect of this silly effort.

10. God was only put into the pledge in the '50s
The original pledge didn't have it-in fact, I didn't know that it was government sanctioned, like the flag.

Interesting rewrite of history but in reality Congress added the phrase "under God" in 1954. Last time I checked our country was founded a wee bit earlier than 1954.... Or is your group another one of those who claims the Grand Canyon is only 2000 years old?

Just asking.

13. Seeing as how public schools are a government program,
then I don't think that it could be more obvious that this violates the separation of church and state. Although students don't have to recite the pledge or stand up, it is far more difficult to not hear it at all.

14. I'm a concerned woman wondering why 'concerned
women' have men speaking for them? I take it, they are not all that concerned.
