I'm offended by bums going through my garbage
Edited on Sun Jan-15-06 05:44 PM by quinnox
I will grab some fast food sometimes at a place downtown and after I'm done I will put in the public trash can on the street and then occasionally if I'm waiting for a bus in the same area I see bums go through the garbage I put my trash in. It really offends me!

Yea, I know some will find it strange but it bothers me and offends me that they are going through my garbage, I didn't put my garbage in there for them to go through it!

I guess the best way to describe it is I feel it is an invasion of my privacy.

I'm editing this because people are getting the wrong impression: I HAVE given money and bought a meal for homeless people before!

This has nothing to do with disliking homeless, ok!!

I just find it offensive, call it strange if you want but that is my feeling.

26. er... "public" trash can
that is used by the public - and the homeless are part of the public. I agree with you meganmonkey, if someone feels that a hungry person who is desperate enough to have to forage public trashcans to eat, is an "invasion of privacy" than one shouldn't use a public trashcan.

38. Maybe they were filming another Quizno's commercial
Like the one they aired during the Super Bowl a few years ago.

Guy tosses part of his sandwich in a trash can and keeps walking, while the woman he's with fishes it out and finishes it.

"There's something about Quizno's".

21. surely you jest....I'm offended that I live in a country that doesn't take
care of its most vulnerable. Homelessness and hunger run deep in this country that proclaims moral superiority and values as a model for the world. Most of the homeless have mental health issues, addictions, and no access to health care.

I do understand your post could be sarcasm; then again, I'm confronted daily in Portland Oregon by persons holding signs on streetcorners asking for spare change and get a little tired of it.

52. Perhaps he went through your garbage because he was offended?
Maybe he was offended that he had not had anything to eat in two days and you would frivolously throw away food that would help him survive for another day.

Perhaps he was offended by a throw away society where if you don't have a suit and job then are not worth anything to anyone.

He may have even been offended by the way society is so self involved that they can not see past their own feelings to help someone else.

Here are the lyrics to a Pink Floyd song. I keep them on my fridge just to remind me every time I reach for something to eat:

"On The Turning Away"

On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"
It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?

53. Regarding your edit
I hope you realize that the problem here is yours, meaning that you need to change your own perspective because what you are feeling is completely irrational, and rather disturbing, at least to me. I am not trying to analyze your psyche, as I am totally unqualified. I am just saying that what bothers you may not be the actual individual going through a trash can, but the greater issue that we HAVE people in this country who NEED to go through trash cans to eat.

Do some volunteer work, it'll make you feel better. And don't wait until Thanksgiving or Christmas - we have enough to do that time of year that we don't want to waste our time explaining to people that we are full of volunteers for those days months in advance.

54. I was reading someplace, been a decade or more
that some communities were pouring kerosene in public trash cans to stop derelicts from obtaining the thrown away food.

I thought to myself, what a bunch of snooty bastards, if someone is hungry enough to look for food in the trash can, others should be feeding them, not trying to destroy what food these poor people need. Sure there are dopers and drunks or people others may say are undeserving of pity. But thats not the point. The point is, we as humans bear a responsibility to others less able for one reason or another to care for their own needs. It is a command, not a request. It is an obligation to buy into the human race, to be part of the human race.

Talk about small minded and petty. What the hell, you were done eating the food, you threw it away and now YOU feel offended? You better hope you never fall in a hole and need someone to help you out.

59. How the hell is it
a violation of privacy to go through trash at a public trash can?

I mean, if the homeless person was going through your garbage outside your home, then I can see an argument being made that it is a violation of privacy (still nowadays everyone knows that any sensitive info should be shredded). That person would also likely be violating and tresspassing on your property as well.

But a public trash can is public. If you don't want someone picking at your leftovers, wait till you get home and toss it.

63. Yeah... strange. Incredibly.
I cleaned out my house before I moved of all the recyclables I had... including a bunch of bottles and cans I had in the garage that I had forgotten about. When I went out in the morning before the trucks had come to pick it up to add a few more bits, the recycling can was EMPTY. I was so grateful that someone had made use of those cans and bottles to redeem for money that would have just gone to waste (and extremely grateful that they had done it completely SILENTLY).

Why on earth would you object to someone who has NOTHING going through something you throw away? Especially useless trash??? Maybe I could understand you having a problem with someone going through your garbage to find receipts or paperwork to steal your identity, but hell... FAST FOOD TRASH? :wtf:

You may THINK that this has nothing to do with disliking the homeless... but you would be WRONG. :eyes:

64. Per your edit
exactly *what* offends you?

You discarded food.

Someone, presumably hungry - or they wouldn't be digging for scraps, finds it where you discarded it (in a PUBLIC trash can) and eats it.

I really don't understand why you feel this is an invasion of *your* privacy. You threw the food away. You threw it into a public trash receptacle. If you are that funky about "personal space" (as in there is some designated "personal space" in the public trashcan that shouldn't be violated by anyone else), then I would suggest that you deal with this personal foible by carrying your food refuse with you to your home, where you can dispose of it in your private home and private trash recepticle.

However, once that food refuse is picked up and dumped in the public dump - it is back into "public" space, and there is no guarantee of "right to privacy" per your fast food refuse.
