Title: RELIGIOUS SPEECH CUT FROM LAS VEGAS GRADUATION CEREMONY

The Clark County School District and free speech advocates are defending school officials' decision to cut short a high school valedictorian's commencement speech, saying the speech would have amounted to school-sponsored proselytizing.

Officials and a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union said Friday that administrators followed federal law when they cut the microphone on Foothill High School valedictorian Brittany McComb as she began deviating from a preapproved speech and reading from a version that mentioned God and contained biblical references.

McComb said she defied school authorities because she believed it was free speech issue.

She knew her speech as valedictorian of Foothill High School would be cut short, but Brittany McComb was determined to tell her fellow graduates what was on her mind and in her heart.

But before she could get to the word in her speech that meant the most to her -- Christ -- her microphone went dead.

The decision to cut short McComb's commencement speech Thursday at The Orleans drew jeers from the nearly 400 graduates and their families that went on for several minutes.

However, Clark County School District officials and an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union said Friday that cutting McComb's mic was the right call. Graduation ceremonies are school-sponsored events, a stance supported by federal court rulings, and as such may include religious references but not proselytizing, they said.

They said McComb's speech amounted to proselytizing and that her commentary could have been perceived as school-sponsored.

5. It was some bullshit fundie valedictorianess trying to bring the flock
to Baby Jesus.

The school admin told her to tone it down and she came out like Billy Sunday and they pulled the plug on her.

Fucking sick shit. You wouldn't believe her response. "Oh! the love! Everyone came up to me and told me how much they felt the Gourd in the air that night" blahblahblah..

Non-issue.

7. She wanted to give thanks to Jesus for everything she is now
and everything she has accomplished.

I wish one of the kids would have stood up and asked her what happened to Jesus with the people of Somalia etc.

She reminds me of the Jesus freaks in the 70's. High on getting attention drawn to themselves by using Christ.

8. I am sick of religion
being shoved down my throat. There is now a church on every corner. Where do they find all of the attendees?

9. Radical fundamentalists are very clever in the crafting of their "argument
It;s what they do BEST...

They want to preach and name-drop the Bible ...a name at a time, and cram their faith into the ears or everyone in the audience...it;'s a free speech issue...

For the secular nature of the audience who may not WANT to hear all that religious mumbo-jumbo in a simple graduation speech from a PUBLIC school... well if they object it's not a separation of church-state or having a religion, not their own, shoved down their throat..they're just being mean and denying HER free speech..:puke:

10. Just think what would happen if a Muslim was valedictorian
the fundies would be in an uproar over being proselytized by an "evil" religion.

11. Im Jewish and I could give a shit
I dont care what the hell she says. The same thing happened at my grad. The girl jsut wanted to say Jesus took her through the tough times (her mom died) and helped her push on. She got cut off too. I signed to petition protesting her getting cut off. I figured she earned it. But whatever, I was young and crazy back then.
