AN INQUIRER READER attending a conference in Japan was sat just feet away from a laptop computer that suddenly exploded into flames, in what could have been a deadly accident.
Guilhem, our astonished reader reports: "The damn thing was on fire and produced several explosions for more than five minutes".

3. A theory on what might have happened........

It probably has something to do with the battery. The circuit that charges the battery might have overcharged the battery causing a fire.

on a airplane?

I depends on what caused the problem, if it was the charging circuit then a laptop might be safe as long as it was not plugged into a charger.

I will be taking one on an airplane on Sunday and then on Monday night and then again on Tuesday and then Saturday and then the following Monday...I think you get the picture.

considering the vast number of dell laptops that have never burst into flames- this sounds like an abberation...probably with a reasonable explanation.
