Jacob's bad luck: Is it . . . Satan?

As if beating a five-term congressman wasn't hard enough, John Jacob said he has another foe working against him: the devil.

"There's another force that wants to keep us from going to Washington, D.C.," Jacob said. "It's the devil is what it is. I don't want you to print that, but it feels like that's what it is."

Jacob said Thursday that since he decided to run for Congress against Rep. Chris Cannon, Satan has bollixed his business deals, preventing him from putting as much money into the race as he had hoped. snip

Asked if he actually believed that "something else" was indeed Satan, Jacob said: "I don't know who else it would be if it wasn't him. Now when that gets out in the paper, I'm going to be one of the screw-loose people."

7. This is the part of Christianity that bugs me

When good things happen to you, the Lord is rewarding you (the not-so-subtle assertion is that God is on your side). When you screw things up a little, God is testing you. You're still his boy, but now He essentially wants you to drop and give him 20 push-ups, religiously speaking. You mess everything up totally, it's the Devil's fault. Where's God during this bedevilling? He must be busy with someone else so the Lord of Lies saw his chance and swooped in. All you gotta do is get God's attention again.

Screwing your life over surely can't be due to the fact that you're a 24-karat nimrod. No, the ebbs and flos of your life are due either to a mostly benign all-powerful entity favoring you, or the embodiment of all evil thinking that you, Christianity's poster boy, is a threat to his nefarious plans.
