1. I think he's just after more publicity...

The "smart" thing (if that can even be an option for him at this point) would have been to apologize and SHUT UP.

4. I'm still waiting for the apology
The best he's come up with is that he didn't really mean it and wouldn't have said it if he wasn't drunk.

9. Exactly, he has to admit what he did
A good apology is one in which the person acknowledges what was said and then apologizes for saying it. For example,in rehab, he will have to admit to specific wrongs - like why he did it, what he said and who he has hurt as a result of his actions. Otherwise, he's just making the motions and will remain a dry drunk. When he can openly admit what he actually did and said (rather than making innocuous statement like "I said something bad") then he will begin his healing process.

Just this morning I was visiting a neighbor. Her son said the f-word while I was there. We were in the other room and we could hear him. She asked him what he said and he said "nothing." When she pressed him he said, "I said a bad word". She asked him what that word was and he finally, after some stammering, reluctantly admitted he said "fuck". She asked him why he said it and if that was all that was said. He admitted he said "fuck you" to his sister because he was mad at her. She asked him if he knew why that was a bad word and he said, "not really, but I know I'm not supposed to say it." He finally admitted that he said it because he knew it would upset his sister. He's five and that was a good enough explanation for his age. He copped to what he said, he admitted that he said it to his sister and did it to upset her, that he said the word in anger and that he knew he shouldn't use that type of language. Then he had to apologize to his sister. Mel could learn a lot from my repentent five year old neighbor.

7. LOL
That sounds about right. "Hi, I just insulted you in the worst way possible, can you help me?" Disgusting. He's after publicity alright, and publicity that makes him look like the aggrieved party.

2. Gibson is buddy-buddy with assholes like Daniel Lapin..
that anti-gay, anti-recycling rabbi buddy of Jack Abramoff.

Maybe Lapin will give Mel Gibson a "Certificate of Sobriety" and back-date it to the date of his chosing?

6. I think he wants to continue working in Hollywood
He has a bunch of kids to support or so I hear.

I was watching the "news" this evening and they showed pictures of Mel Gibson in the bar last Friday...why I thought he was a family man..he had his arms around several different women. Doesn't his wife live with him in LA? What must she think if she sees those pictures.

Randi Rhodes was so funny yesterday when she was talking about Mel Gibson..she said he had his stereotypes wrong when he asked the cop if he was a Jew...she said he should ask his lawyer if he is Irish!

8. I would say even if his reasons are suspect
never look a gift horse in the mouth. I'm sure the fellows in the Anti-Defamation League are smart enough to see that they have scored a win already.

10. Perhaps a chance
Maybe getting closer to the Jewish community would be helpful for Mel Gibson. If he is being honest about his plea for help then there would be nothing better than for him to get all the help from the Jewish community.

There is a true story I read about a German antisemite who killed a Jew in Germany in the 1920's in a hate crime. While he was in jail, the victim's mother wrote him a letter stating she would forgive him if he truly regretted what he did. This man got out of jail, for good behavior, 5 years into his sentence and he became a key person who saved many Jews from the Holocaust by helping them leave Germany.

Maybe this drunken incident was a blessing for Mel Gibson. He might get closer and get to know the people he dislikes and see they are no boogiemen.
