Omaha is Not Nebraska (Check out this mistaken headline on Yahoo News)
Small Plane Crashes in Southwest Nebraska 38 minutes ago

OMAHA, Neb. - A small plane crashed into a field, killing all three people aboard, officials said Thursday.

The wreckage was spotted by a utility worker shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday about a mile south of the Millard Airport. Dense fog blanketed the area at the time.

Three people were on board the Piper 28, a single-engine airplane, and there were no survivors, said Don Hughes, manager of the Federal Aviation Administration's Omaha terminal approach control.

It was unclear whether the plane crashed late Wednesday or early Thursday, he said.

"If the pilot never talked to anybody, and never called us on radar or anything, we would have no idea" what happened, Hughes said.

Nevermind, I get it now, the article says "Southwest Nebraska" when it is actually on the Eastern side of the state. Right?

9. Did you mean Omaha is not in SW Nebraska?
Edited on Thu Dec-29-05 03:29 PM by Oreo

Do we need to start having geography lessons ;)

I'd agree with the other poster, the OMAHA at the beginning of the article is where the report was filed.

15. Brain hurt
It took me a few minutes but I think I got it! The report came from Omaha Nebraska, Omaha is located in the SE part of Nebraska. But the plane crashed in in the SW part of Nebraska, the other side of the state.

And what does this have to do with politics? just asking.

By the way, are there any motels in Dallas within walking distance of the Alamo?

I'm planning on going there for Mardi Gras.

10. Perhaps the reporter is REPORTING FROM Omaha, rather than
from the crash site.

22. That is correct.
The dateline always signifies where the REPORTER is at - where the story was filed - not where the event occurred.

For example, one may see a dateline from WASHINGTON DC regarding Bush's visit (all the time) to Crawford, Texas.

Just pointing this out.

(I was a reporter for 12 years).

23. "Small Plane Crashes in Southwest Nebraska 38 minutes ago"
That's the Yahoo headline.

It should read (Small Plane Crashes in Southwest Omaha 38 minutes ago)

It has nothing to do with where the story was filed from.

Omaha is on the Eastern edge of Nebraska, right across from Iowa.

11. As a resident of omaha
I must say that Omaha is INDEED in Nebraska. I should know, I cross the state line between Nebraska and Iowa on a regular basis and Omaha is on the nebraska side of things.

28. A little chilly in winter, but I loved it.
Omaha was the first place I worked on contract. The first place I actually drove a car in winter (and with a Georgia tag, you know they gave me a wide berth!)... Aksarben... Car wash days... Udder ointment (it has a picture of a happy cow on the label)... Humongous snow turds building up on the fenders... Crawling under the car to free up a frozen accelerator linkage... Lived right behind a Mexican restaurant and a liquor store... The first place I ever ate the worm in a bottle of mezcal... WinneVegas right up the road... Nice people, who caught on to things the first time I used "y'all" in a sentence and who thought it was rather charming...

*sigh* Long ago, and far away...

13. That's not a mistaken headline at all...
The headline is "Small Plane Crashes in Southwest Nebraska 38 minutes ago," That seems correct.

The date line is "OMAHA, Neb." which would be where the AP bureau is located. Also correct.

What's the problem here?

Edited on Thu Dec-29-05 03:38 PM by SimpleTrend
If they mean where Omaha is relative to Nebraska. But is it southeast Nebraska? Or simply east?

La Vista appears southwest of Omaha.

Edited on Thu Dec-29-05 03:44 PM by DelawareValleyDem
The headline says southwest Nebraska. Omaha is not in that part of the state.

The airport itself is located in southwest Omaha, according to the text in the full article.

Therefore, it seems the headline used the name of the state when it should have used the city name, hence the OP's title, Omaha is Not Nebraska

Edited several times for clarity.

19. A clue from the article...
Millard Airport, in southwest Omaha, is not equipped for instrument approaches, Hughes said.

I now can see that the headline mistakenly placed Omaha in SouthWEST Nebraska. Where's the OP? Do I get a prize??

25. You have my gratitude for not placing Omaha on the Colorado border.
Yes, the plane crashed in Southwest Omaha, not Southwest Nebraska.

Yahoo still has the same incorrect headline.

I guess no one really cares about where the plane crashed, or where Omaha is in Nebraska.

Small plane, small State, who cares?
