Mass. governor says stem-cell research "Orwellian"
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060831/sc_nm/science_stemcells_romney_dc

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a 2008 Republican presidential hopeful, said on Thursday his administration's new restrictions on stem cell research are aimed at heading off an "Orwellian" future.

The state's Department of Public Health this week issued regulations banning the creation of embryos for research purposes. Scientists say stem cell research could lead to breakthroughs in treatments for diseases including cancer. But the issue has become ethically and politically volatile because extracting the cells entails destruction of an embryo.

"I believe it crosses a very bright moral line to take sperm and eggs in the laboratory and start creating human life," Romney told reporters. "It is Orwellian in its scope. In laboratories you could have trays of new embryos being created."

Romney spoke a week after a Massachusetts company, Advanced Cell Technology, said it had developed a way to make human embryonic stem cells without harming the original embryo, a finding it said could dispel ethical objections. Stem cells are the body's master cells, capable of turning into any other type of cell. They are available from many sources, but experts believe the most powerful and versatile cells may be those taken from days-old embryos.

I can't stand my piece of shit governor!!! :grr: :grr: :grr:

I was there 7 years, and in neighboring NH for 18 more, and couldn't stomach it. Ever.

8. He lied to the public, and cheated in the Western part of the state
It did not help that his opponent's campaign was less than spirited.

That said, he is a batshit CRAZY asshole with delusions of grandeur. He needs to be got gone, ASAP.

We've got some good candidates running on the D side this time--any one of them should be able to wipe the floor with his idiot LT Governor, who is the next up for the GOP, and seems more concerned about her hairdo than anything else, and who cannot answer the simplest of questions.

14. Idiot
If he's going to make an analagy, you'd think in the state with the most highger educational institutions per capita in the country, he'd at least get it right. Or someone on his staff would have caught it.

The only thing Orwellian I see is the right wing's manipulation of language untill we're all living in backwards land.

12. What is with these people grossly misusing our statements?
They call radical Islamists fascists. This idiot calls stem-cell research Orwellian? I'm tired of them highjacking words which describe them and turning them into useless drivel.

As in Brave New World. Not 1984. Glad to see our "leaders" have their dystopia stories straight.

9. I think he was confusing books he read in high school.
During the same english class, i remember reading Orwell's "1984" and Huxley's "Brave New World", and he probably did too. The latter had to do with a nightmarish future making babies only from test tubes (and people were encourged to have sex, but not to love and form relationships)... which is NOT what stem cell research is about, but that might be what this muddled-brain fool may be thinking of. Hopefully, stem cell research will provide cures for alzheimers before it gets much worse for ol' mitt.

13. Someone just tell Mitt about in vitro fertilization?
You're a little behind the times, Mr. Romney. Fertility clinics have been combining eggs and sperm in petri dishes for decades.

And, "Orwellian" is not the adjective you're flailing for. "Huxleyan" might be more appropriate. Go read a book, Mr. Romney. Learn something, would you?

I'm hoping that in the next few years, Mitt Romney is diagnosed with a very rapidly degenerating case of PROGRESSIVE Multiple Sclerosis.

Let's see how HE enjoys living with this nightmare. I have a feeling it won't seem "Orwellian" (it's Huxley-an, you ASS!) to him at all. It will seem like a lifeline that assholes keep constantly dangling in front of him, then pulling away.

Fucker.

20. My sister has MS
It seems those on the right (and some on the left) can only have empathy when they are stricken with illness. But then it isn't exactly empathy, is it?

If you look at the R's who support stem cell, they all have someone close to them that can benefit from the research.

I find that more telling than almost anything else about those who call themselves conservative.

And to even out my point, Jim Langevin, my DINO rep, is "pro-life" (HA!) sided with Frist on the whole Schaivo thing ubt its curiously pro stem cell research. Go figure, he's paralyzed and it could potentially benifit him.

I just don't get people like that.

22. Stand down, fudge. His wife already has MS.
And yet he is still adamantly against stem-cell research. Apparently he wants to be President more than he wants to see his wife's illness treated. What a prince. :sarcasm:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitt_Romney#Biography

He has been married to his wife, Ann Romney, for 36 years. They have five sons (Tagg, Matt, Josh, Ben and Craig) and nine grandchildren. Ann Romney was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998

Hey, at least he gave four out of the five kids regular names (but I'll bet Tagg's his favorite :-) )

26. Holy crap.
I do NOT understand that. If I were her, I'd have divorced his ass so fast, he wouldn't have known what hit him. Guess she needs help with getting around and having the shots.

Who is he going to get to be First Lady if she's unable dur to her illness? Has he considered how stressful that would be for her, and how exhausted it would make her? No. Selfish fucker.

Turns out he's worse than I thought! But I stand by my original wish. He's THAT selfish. The only thing that might make him blink an eyes might be for it to happen to HIM. Wives you can always trade in for younger bimbos when they've outlived their usefulness. Everybody knows that. :eyes:
