Who else hates Safeco?

Mike McGavick, the former chairman of Safeco Corp is running for Senate as a GOPer

I hate them because they owe me a sizable refund and they've been promising to send it for a month and it hasn't arrived. Everyone I talk to at the company lies to me about it and when it was sent and then I find out that one of the guys whose name appeared on the stationary guaranteeing me the refund has left the company to run for Senate as a Republican in Washington state.

I’ve written my insurance commissioner and I am getting angry and have saved and copied all correspondence going both ways.

My rant for the day. What a bunch of crooks.

1. I LOVE Safeco
They've always stood behind me.

Six months ago I was in a car accident I didn't cause. The police wrote up the accident report and said I was 100% at fault. I contacted Safeco and gave them all the information, including a witness statement the police wouldn't take. Safeco paid all my medical bills, waived my car insurance for the period I was without a vehicle, paid for a rental car (including the insurance), kept in contact with me and up to date on the corrispondence between them, the police and the other guy's insurance company.

Safeco also paid out to the other guy for all his property damage and medical bills while they were investigating the accident themselves.

Three months later the police report was amended to show the other driver was 100% at fault. All my out of pocket expenses were reimbursed by Safeco, no questions asked and no receipts required.

If they hadn't gone to bat for me, the accident would still be on my record and Safeco wouldn't have been reimbursed by the other guy's insurance for all my, and his, costs.

And not only that, but my insurance rates stayed the same despite the fact that I bought a newer truck which automatically kicks in higher insurance rates.

I've been with them for more than 15 years and not once have I had a complaint, even when I've been at fault or blame for minor accidents or traffic citations.

11. Thank your agent
Trust me, the Safeco corporation had nothing to do with your excellent service.

14. I don't have an agent
I go directly through Safeco's corporate offices in Seattle.

So you're wrong, Safeco corporation had EVERYTHING to do with my excellent service.

15. Everybody has an agent
It's the only way they'll issue a policy. I see you paid for expenses out of pocket and were reimbursed. When they do their job correctly, you don't have to do that. I insisted they do their job correctly. I didn't have any out of pocket expenses, just alot of grief to get them to do the things they should have done from the gate.

16. I haven't talked to the same person at the corporate office more than once

So once again, you're wrong.

And my out of pocket expenses were for things like co-payments on prescriptions and doctor visits.
That's not something ANY insurance company can prepay. I've been with several other insurance companies over the years and not one of them prepaid co-pays and doctor's visits.

You apparently have never been in an accident which required a doctor's visit.

17. Uhm,
They arranged for the hospital and doctor to send the bills direct to Seattle and paid the bills directly. So yes, they do that. I also had the same adjuster that I talked to about every aspect of the claim, and eventually her superviser. I also got them to work directly with the other insurance company, the one of the woman who was at fault, so the final payments came direct through them so I didn't even have to worry about the deductible or anything. So it may have gone smoothly for you because you accepted their bullshit method of shuffling things off as long as they could. If you have enough money to lay out in advance, then great. I don't. But the real problem with them were things like not telling me the truth about time limits on storage and things of that nature. Or telling me checks were sent when they weren't. Or that they didn't have the police report so that I could get that to them. Just plain incompetence.

3. I love Safeco too. I have been with them for 30 years.
They have always paid up quickly for things they didn't really have to pay. My mother was an independent insurance agent and Safeco was her favorite company. I have dealt with other companies when we have had an accident and someone else's insurance owes us and it was nightmarish. One time my husband had to just go park himself at the company and sit there until they ante'd up. Sorry you are having so much trouble. Have you talked to your agent? Maybe they can make some headway. Or was the guy going into politics your agent?

9. there's no agent involved it's a refund
They lie and lie and lie but send letters (without the check) promising that it's on the way.

4. I tried to collect a claim from them a few years ago.
And they didn't want to pay it. One of their customers hit my parked motorcycle. They said it wasn't his fault. I wound up taking them to small claims court, and got a judgement against them. They still kept dragging their feet.

Finally I called their claims office (Which was less than a mile from my house) and said I'm stopping by to pick up my check in 30 minutes, and if it's not ready, my next stop is the courthouse to file a real lawsuit.

5. I despise all of the insurance companies!
They are all just great-until you file a claim. A sizable claim will invariably result in a hassle, delay & any other inconvenience they can throw in your path. They all suck.

7. Ditto, took the words right out of my mouth
and I work for Insurance and have become more and more hateful to the industry...it's a racket and Safeco was one of the companies Red Lining...now they are still redlining, using credit scores to determine rather they will take the risk of insuring you...not claims, not driving record...CREDIT SCORE...(this is all companies except American Family, who will start using scores next year)

6. Wanna hear a good one?
My wife totalled our cadillac a few years ago on Nov. 7th. When Christmas rolled around, after numerous attempted contacts (finally got an estimate after 6 weeks)I still had not received a check. During the week between Xmas and New Years, I started phoning Safeco offices. Local, no answer, regional...no answer. So I got hold of their main operator and told her of my dilemma. After numerous attempts (everyone was on vacation), she was able to connect me with a CEO's assistant in Seattle, Wa. I let this gal have it! Told her the whole story. She was outraged, to say the least, and had me a check overnighted. The fact that a company this large had no one available to take my calls is unforgivable. The CEO's assistant agreed. I hope it made them take a long look at their vacation policy. Everyone cannot go on vacation at the same time!!

Someone from his campaign just came by and posted a comment directing me to his website. Former Safeco CEO Mike McGavick is running as a Republican against incumbent Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell in Washington.

10. Letter sent to insurance commissioner and Safeco
Names changed AND amount undisclosed

I am due an (undisclosed refund) which Safeco’s workers keep saying is in the mail. Every person I talk to says it was mailed on a different date. The refund was due on 11-23-05 on the date I signed and faxed an exclusion on my policy for (John Doe.) They said the amount would be over nighted to me. Then they kept saying they weren't getting the fax, until I told them I had three copies of the fax and of the successful fax transmission from different commercial locations and that the next fax was going to the insurance commissioner’s office along with all three successful faxes I sent to them and then (and only then) they located all the faxes and acknowledged that I was due the refund. Now they sent me a letter stating that the change has taken place and I am due the (amount undisclosed) amount. I continue to receive correspondence from their office, but no refund. Every time I call the office they say it’s been mailed on a different date and have taken to hanging up on me rather than transferring me to the accounting department (I don’t) have that number. I want to know how to file felony charges against them, because to my family (undisclosed amount) is a lot of money. I am a nurse and I have always played by the rules and I want them to be held accountable. Please help me. I have copies of all fax transmissions and correspondence.

13. I hate them too
Every single aspect of a claim last year was screwed up. From how the rental car reimbursement is paid to the length of time to keep the rental car to the adjuster going to see the wrecked car. All of it. Somebody even lost the keys to the car. It was just a mess. I'd had little problems with them before, but that was the end of the line for me. I'll never use Safeco again.
