A survey finds that 73 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of first lady Laura Bush.

(CNN) -- Far more Americans think highly of first lady Laura Bush than they think of her husband, a poll released Thursday said.

Fewer than half of Americans say they have a favorable opinion of President Bush and his top aides, about the same number who said that last summer, the poll found.

But nearly three out of four (73 percent) said they have a favorable opinion of Laura Bush, the CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll said. Thirteen percent described their opinion of her as unfavorable.

...which I've seen a few times on DU -- early in his political life, they were driving back from a campaign event, and ** asked Laura if she had any ideas for how he could improve his speeches. Dutifully she said that no, she thought his style was just fine. He kept on pestering her, and finally she decided that maybe he wasn't just fishing for compliments, and ventured a couple of suggestions. ** became so flustered that he drove the car into the garage wall while trying to park it!

My guess is that he is passive-aggressive at the best of times -- and as you say, that mean streak doesn't bode well for a happy home life. He makes dismissive comments to, not just complete strangers, but the press (e.g. going on about Laura sweeping the porch) ... and figures out a way to blame her for things, such as announcing that they have to cut their vacation short and leave Crawford because Laura doesn't want to stay any longer ...

Five years of insincere simpering about "I love my wife" and "she could have done better than marrying me" -- more if he did this as Texas governor -- really don't make up for that kind of public humiliation. My family was fond of needling each other too, but we never did it in front of strangers.

I think, personally, he is an arrogant asshole, and even if I were in the same room with him, I would do my damnedest to ignore him.

As far as Laura is concerned, I think she really needs a wake-up call, and needs to get away from that man. But she is obviously not willing to stand up for herself, and free herself from the clutches of the Bush family. I think she must be pretty much drugged up half or more of the time in order to stand being around them.
