Oprah/22 years later
I saw something on MSNBC today that really made me ask myself the follow question?Oprah has been around for 22 years, and why do so many love her.I understand that she is crazy rich and one of the most powerful people in entertainment today.
Lets look past the facts of the money and fame and connections that she has.I am not hating on her at all because what she as acheived its very impressive as a whole.
Plus I know she has given things away on her shows over the years, cars money etc and most recently wanted to make a statement against child molestors by getting them off the streets.
I am really curious if she has that much clout with in the country, how come she has never taken a serious run to make a difference ( congresswomen, senator or any other office)
Also I would really like to know on what her views are on the various issues.

5. I've worked for billionaires... trust me, it's never enough
The more they get, the more they want and the cheaper they get.

All those gifts and contributions... business write offs...

8. I've also been around people with a lot of money

and I think you underestimate their ethics and beliefs and priorities. At some point, time becomes far more valuable than money. There's also the issue of what a single human being can do, and how ambition measures against vision. It's not so simple. In fact, it's those kind of generalizations that account for a lot of the mistrust and prejudice in the world.

10. No, you don't understand
I was a personal assistant for the heir to a major distillery fortune. You'd know the name. I've also worked for a real estate developer, another name you'd know or could certainly google with hundreds of thousands of hits.

I'm saying, what I witnessed over the course of many years, is a hold that comes over them. A compulsion. It's called greed and few human beings can withstand the powerful pull.

Not a generalization whatsoever. It's the real deal. I lived it for many years. I got myself out of the situation because I couldn't stand watching it happen.

3. 22 years?
Wow, I didn't realize she had been in the "biz" that long!

As far as your question, maybe the politics game just isn't something she wants to play. Good question, though.

4. I understand that she is a moderate conservative and
she will not discuss politics on her show. I also respect her for her achievements, she's a woman who has come a long way. But I've always thought she was way over-rated. Just my opinion.

6. she looked good by comparison
at the time her show started, there were a slew of talk shows, just like reality shows now. The glut of them were mostly really, really, bad.
Donahue's was good in the beginning, but somewhere along the way he turned narcissitic and bizarrely beligerent. It was right about then that Oprah started.
Comparatively, she was a breat of hygenically laundered air and the stay at home moms ate it up like chocolate.
Do you remember Forrest Gump? It was like there was this big talk-show hurricane, and she sat up on the mast and weathered it. When the sun came up, she was the only left standing. Did that make hers the better show? not really, just the more palatable at the time.

7. She would be a huge disappointment to you
She is so out of touch, she makes G H W Bush look down to earth.

I caught ten seconds of her show the other day as she attempted to pump gas for the first time since 1983.

Yeah, she has the common touch :eyes:

She is a fine person, but she would be a disasterous disappointment as a public servant.

9. Her 'life' is
her 'success' and vs. versa, I believe. I've been around her in working situations. She wasn't terribly interactive with the 'understaff'. And when she started making movies, she went non-union. I have nothing against her -what she's accomplished is impressive - but I wouldn't be interested in having her in politics.
