Americans look for political manipulation as gasoline prices plunge

WASHINGTON — There is no mystery or manipulation behind the recent fall in gasoline prices, analysts say. Try telling that to many. motorists.

Almost half of Americans believe the plunge at the pump has more to do with politics and the November elections, than economics.

Retired farmer Jim Mohr of Lexington, Ill., rattled off a tankful of reasons why pump prices may be falling, including the end of the summer travel season and the fact that no major hurricanes have disrupted Gulf of Mexico output.

"But I think the big important reason is Republicans want to get elected," Mohr, 66, said while filling up for $2.17 a gallon. "They think getting the prices down is going to help get some more incumbents re-elected."

According to a new Gallup poll, 42% of respondents agreed with the statement that the Bush administration "deliberately manipulated the price of gasoline so that it would decrease before this fall's elections." Fifty-three percent of those surveyed did not believe the conspiracy theory; 5% said they had no opinion.

1. Are you beginning to think Dems might take a House?
I'm working for it but I'm not expecting Dems to win, yet. I'm cautiously optimistic. I would love to know that you think we will win.

2. I'm not thinking that far ahead
right now my thoughts are on people catching on to the manipulation of gas prices.

I've read several defenses of the oil industry right here on DU.

From long-time posters, even.

It isn't the fucking "economics of supply and demand".

It's the economics of these greedy fuckers gouging us.

7. Someone actually tried to argue that gas prices were based
on supply and demand. I wish I had seen that post. I'm focused on the midterms. I think we have a slim chance only if we all work towards getting out the vote.

4. Well I have been disheartened over the last couple of weeks

But after Keith Olberman's speech on countdown tonight, I have some hope. At least there is one person in the country who is willing to step up to the microphone and tell the truth.

5. I was driving up the Interstate here in WV,
and I passed several gas stations (truck stops actually) and it occurred to me that the low price of regular gas ($2.19/gal here), are much much lower than the price of Diesel (which the trucks use).
Prices on Diesel were somewhere between $2.69 and $2.89/gal.
I remember when the auto industry was making diesel cars (late 1970's and early 80's) because Diesel was so much lower than regular gasoline.
This makes me think (or justifies my thinking) that the gas price reductions are bogus, and I am positive that prices will jump after the elections, with some BS story from the oil companies and the government that there is no connection between that raise and the elections. Hide and watch!

12. How about leaving a note at the gas pump
every time you fill up:

'Lower gas prices brought to you by desperate Republicans and their oil industry buddies who can't wait to raise them after the election.'

13. The last six years have been a freaking
ROLLERCOASTER. Every time I think people are shutting down and giving up I get a little glimmer of hope. If it takes gas prices to instill some cynicism into people, so be it. Here's hoping they'll start seeing the big picture.

15. The most intriguing development
has been te testimony by the rebel generals. What they said yesterday was so remarkable. Remember, these are recently retired brass. They still have a huge following in the armed forces. What they are saying is definitely being heard by the current leadership, most of which is sick of the civilian "leadership".
