Pair of sexual abusers sentenced to total of 180 years in prison

White Plains — Even the court reporter had to stretch his neck to decipher the words racing from the 14-year-old girl as she faced down her two sexual abusers yesterday. Within an hour, they would together be sentenced to a total of 180 years in federal prison.

Kenneth Leight and his girlfriend, Miriam Jass, both of Warwick, were convicted of sexually abusing two 12-year-old girls — one of them a relative of Leight's — in 2004. Leight also was convicted of possessing child pornography.

"You ruined my life" and "I trusted you" were the few phrases that were discernible through the girl's tear-soaked wails.

By the end of her statement, all her words ran together, mere syllables of a continuous sob. Except these, uttered at the close: "I'm a survivor. You deserve death."

Robinson said he was dismayed at Leight's lack of remorse and failure to even acknowledge the two victims as they shared their pain with the court. "The notion that you can be let out to victimize again is one I cannot see." One hundred fifteen years, to be served consecutively.

The 32-year-old Jass was next. I do believe there is a distinction between Leight's actions and Jass', Robinson said. "But I don't know which is worse." Sixty-five years, to be served consecutively.
