Hang in There..Opi! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and any other DU'ers who are caught up in this.....

1. Check the BBC article, there are comments at the end
from people on the scene, and it doesn't sound too bad.

A few comments were from near the epicenter.

I don't think this was a terrible one except for the few people stuck in elevators.

3. How do we know at this point...there are folks in Buffalo,NY in terrible
problems that the Corporate Media has disquised, obfuscated or "played down." :shrug;

I don't know that Bushie Government really want's to report ANYTHING that might push folks to Gore's "Climate Change" and where those "without power" shouldn't just deal with it while the Rich get their "Private Planes" OFF THE ISLAND ...so they aren't "inconveniened."

5. I skipped the article and went for the comments
I've got a cousin who lives there.

The media will hype this one to get Foley, Hastert, the coming election, worsening polls, and the mess in Iraq off the news.

2. Probably just a temporary blackout situation.
Otherwise, it doesn't sound too bad. My daughter's got a friend at the University of Hawaii and I tried to log onto their site, but it's down because of the blackout situation.

7. KamaAina Is In Hawaii, Too
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 06:17 PM by Tace
We might get a word from him on this.

On Edit: I emailed him with a link to this thread, asking him to report in.

2nd Edit: Damn, his mail came back undelivered. I'll have to try going through his DU profile. Not sure he's got email enabled, though.

3rd Edit: Oh well, no email in DU profile. I sent him an IM with a link to this thread. He's pretty active. We may hear from him soon.

Also, he's a good guy. I met him at a DU meetup in Manhattan two summers ago.

10. just got our power back on...
posting from Maui... we got a pretty good shake, but nothing really bad... we've been thru worse, honestly... our power was out for about 5 hours, resulting in closed stores and non working traffic lights, but the MPD was on it very quickly, directing traffic at all the major intersections... with the power back on, everything is quickly returning back to normal... Mahalo Ke Akua...!! (Thank God!)

local radio is reporting quite a bit of damage on the Kona coast of the Big Island... structural damage to some of the hotels and possibly the Kona Hospital... lots of landslides and rockfalls throughout the islands... the road to Hana is closed for now.. crews are working on it and parts of Hana and Keanae were evacuated earlier due to landslides, but these communities are quickly returning back to normal.

the road to Lahaina was closed due to rockfall and crews are working on that too... road should be open shortly.. the Maui airport is now open and all flights except United are proceeding as scheduled. At last word, United has cancelled all incoming and outgoing flights for today as a precaution...

heard from my son in Honolulu who also felt this quake quite strongly... he was at home and hadn't heard from anyone when we called, so I have no first hand accounts of the situation on Oahu... hope all is well over there...

:hi:

14. Have my Atlas out for the Hawaiian Islands...and trying to figure out
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 07:30 PM by KoKo01
the Tourist Spots and the rest...The Big Island got it bad? Cattle Farms and other stuff but the "Tourist Spots" are okay?

It's great having to do this "map stuff" with my atlas. I always loved Geography back in the "oldie days" of schooling. I hear that Geography isn't even taught anymore.

Anyway...looking through the "chain of islands" it's interesting that maybe the "Tourist Spots" escaped unscathed.

But then...I know that CanCun, Mexico was devastated by Hurricane last year along with NO's and yet one doesn't hear a word about it since it's a FAVE of "Spring Break" Americans and touristas....

I guess it all depends on the strength of ADVERTISING of the Corporatist Hotel/Tourista Propaganda "how well one recovers in the Travel Brochures..to draw back in the MONEY CROWD.

I still hope all are safe there and that life in "Paradise" can be good again. Maybe the US MEDIA is hyping it all and it wasn't that big an Earthquake after all. Just a "blip" on the seismology charts?

19. My Brother and his Wife are docked on a cruise ship....
in Maui....He's an early bird and actually called my mom 1/2 before the Quake...He called back after the quake when he heard it made national news-he said that they felt nothing on the ship and the only inconvienience for them (and he snickered when he told me this) was that a five hour shopping excursion was cancelled and the passengers were not allowed to leave the ship....Told me he told his wife he was heart-broken too....

Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 07:58 PM by KoKo01
the Ship... Seems from reports (if one can believe the MSM) that it depended on where you where in Hawaiian Islands as to how it affected one's vacation or lifestyle.

I wouldn't want to have saved to take my Anniversary in Hawaii and had it all ruined by an Earthquake...but those are the chances one takes today with "Climate Change."

Or out there on the coast surfing the extra big waves from the little quake.

I sent PM yesterday and no response, so I hope's he's okay.
