Veiled UK teacher's aide NOT discriminated against, says court.
Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 12:27 PM by riderinthestorm
"...her claims of direct and indirect discrimination, and her claim of harassment, were dismissed."

She was awarded monetary damages for emotional pain though because the school didn't follow standard protocol for letting her go.

1. Good outcome.
Maybe she can find a segregated Islamic school or another line of work. Her winnings will support her until she does.

There's no way she could have taught language skills in this thing:

4. She's the one choosing to cut herself off from everyone around her.
That hood over her head is her way of segregating herself.

7. While she was there, her hood was a physical barrier that
cut her off and separated her from the people around her. That is what it is intended to do and it is very effective.

8. Right.
It's the victim's fault.

Like women who wear mini skirts. They're just asking for sex.

9. Who said she's a victim?
Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 03:03 PM by pnwmom
She's choosing to wear a hood over her head to put a barrier between herself and other people.

Actually, it is the veil-promoters who blame women for being victimized. Their idea is that men can't restrain themselves, so women have to hide.

10. Ironic that you call it a hood.
"how do we, as a secular society, accomodate population subgroups (usually fundies) who, under the guise of freedom of their religion -- one of our strongest values -- would seek to undermine the very foundations of our secular society?"

You keep mentioning "barriers" but when it comes down to it, it seems you're worried about muslim women trying to sap our precious bodily fluids.

16. As Bizarre As The Total Extremist Strawman In Post #8 As Well.
My jaw just about dropped when I saw an innocent statement responded to with a sentiment of comparing it to condoning the rape of women in miniskirts.

Yes, some of this logic is extremely bizarre in my opinion.

12. I was talking about religious fundamentalists, whether immigrants or
homegrown, whose goal is to impose religious law in our secular society, that is, the Christians who want to turn the U.S. into a Christian nation, or Muslim fundamentalists who advocate for Sharia (as happened recently in Canada).

If your second paragraph is a joke, the humor escapes me. And the meaning.

14. How silly.
The complete obscurment of her face was a barrier to effective teaching of language.

If she's that fastidious, let her find a job where she is never in danger of seeing a male past puberty.

This is simply inappropriate attire.

I'd hesitate to allow her around heavy machinery in that getup, too.

30. Nice try
But a teacher uses her face to communicate. If it is covered up, the kids don't get her best teaching.

21. She interviewed for the job without the veil on
Then she showed up to work with the veil on and claimed she was being discriminated against.

Sorry, that's all I had to hear. If she was all that serious about her faith, she would have worn the veil to the interview.

This is such a no-brainer. No way can she teach young children with her face covered. And why not wear the veil to the interview?

many of them were ethnic minority immigrants whose first language was not English.

and the Muslim Council also criticized her for doing this since they said Islam does not require a veil in front of children.

3. Another frivolous lawsuit pays bigtime
What a waste of time, and probably consumed a fair bit of money for the school to take care of this. Clearly she couldn't do her job in that get-up.

Sounds like the school is paying for hustling her out too fast, I read that as meaning she was a REALLY bad teacher....

20. Wow, this is just sad.
We can't have our children exposed to hooded and veiled women from other cultures with their hideous get-ups. While we're at it, let's go back to traditional understanding of appropriate attire: No trousers for girld, no "punk" outfits for any students (according to my tee-vee, even sensitive mothers on shows like "ER" know better than to let their kids dress like that -- far better to wear lipstick and a miniskirt!)

Kick for "freethinkers" who can "barely tolerate" the hijab, with its implications of anti-Americanism (the same implications implied by some kid in an anarcho-punk t-shirt. No wonder nobody in the mainstream is gonna care if they get hauled off in demonstrations... "they have no business going out in public wearing a uniform that is clearly intended to provoke and challenge the very fundamentals of our society!")

22. You can't teach with your face covered!
Especially when your students are only in the 2nd grade.

This is not about being intolerant of this teacher's religious beliefs and clothing. It is about this teacher being intolerant of the best interests of her students.

26. nobody is saying to ban it completely, we are talking about a teaching
environment.

teachers don't wear miniskirts either when they are teaching.

but they are free to wear whatever they want outside of that.
