When asked about Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki's claim that he could stamp out violence in six months if the Americans would give him more weapons and control over his forces, Rumsfeld said such remarks should be expected.

"He's a politician," Rumsfeld said. "We ought not to be surprised.

"Now we just sit back and enjoy the democracy that's there."

Some were quick to criticise his words and tone.

"Today a secretary of defence, who should have been fired a long time ago, lost even greater touch with reality," said Massachusetts Senator John Kerry. "Playing rhetorical word games and tweaking the tactics of a fundamentally flawed strategy will not get the job done," Kerry said.

2. How insulting to Mr. Maliki.
Another example of how BushCo is spending our political capital.
