Kerrys comment can be taken to mean that its hard to AFFORD college
Edited on Tue Oct-31-06 01:05 PM by LSK
Lots of folks cant afford college and it has nothing to do with brainpower. Lots of folks join the military so they can afford to go to college. They didnt count on getting sent to Iraq instead.

Kerry needs to get on top of this and not back down.

1. Read what he meant - The RW has been distorting what he said.

5. They will whatever. It is better that he attacks Bush than spending
hours trying to explain the quote to people who do not want to understand.

I got it the first time I read it. He does not say the word "MILITARY" once in the quote. He speaks of being stuck in Iraq. Who do you think this means.

11. Not "the tape" that they're showing on the cables.
They're showing video of Kerry (pictures work best, you know). It cuts into Kerry speaking mid-sentence. Then they 'report' Tony Snows words, and Kerry's response, then McCain, and on and on we go!

The MSNBC anchor, talking to Kelly O'Donnell, just said, "I don't see Kerry denying that he said those words." Puhleeze! Can they be any more like Faux???

3. I just heard Scarborough lambasting Kerry. McCain's calling for
and apology from Kerry. WTF?

Frankly, I haven't seen what it was that Kerry said the Cons are howling over. I don't care. It is a distraction they are going to try and exploit if they see the shit sticking to the wall.

What I'd really like to see is Kerry punching his 'good friend' John McCain in the political nose!!!!

6. I heard it, and it works either way
I caught part of an audio clip of what he said. It wasn't clear to me if he was talking about uneducated /leaders/ getting us stuck in Iraq, or if he was talking about if you are uneducated you end up in the military and then stuck in Iraq. The clip didn't have any of the lead-up to the statement, though, so there was no context (surprise).

But it works either way for me.

Unfortunately, for a lot of folks, the military looks like the best way out of a bad life. So even if that is what Kerry meant, I don't hold it against him. It's true - if you blow your educational opportunities or you don't have any and you turn to the military as a way out, you may very well find yourself "stuck in Iraq".

A lot of people join out of a sense of duty. But a lot join out of desparation.

7. The way I interpreted it...
is if you don't go to school and study you end up stupid like Bush and stuck in Iraq.

8. Deja vu. Swiftboating again. Limbaugh is going on and on.

I figure Kerry has one of those rare chances to do things over and he has already started. This could get bloody; I'll bet on him.

9. Money for College?

Getting help with college tuition is one of the major enticements used in
recruiting campaigns. In reality, however, GIs rarely get anywhere near the
amount of aid from the military they were led to believe. The average
participant in the Montgomery GI Bill actually receives less money than a
student who simply receives a Pell Grant and a Stafford Loan.

Moreover, many enlistees do not even qualify for the GI Bill or the
Army/Navy College Fund, as these benefits generally require the GI to have
served under specific conditions:

enlist for a critical skill service] as announced periodically and as displayed on the Recruit Quota
System and remain qualified in the military occupational specialty (MOS)
for which the soldier enlisted (USAREC Reg. 621-1, ¡ì1-2.3.b.1.d).

According to the US Veterans Administration, only 35% of veterans receive
GI Bill funds for college, while only 15% ever receive a college degree
(Ensign 2004, pg. 22). In comparison, 70% of students who apply for civilian
financial aid receive help paying for college (SNAFU 2004).
