Robo calls to blacks in TN: "If you voted for Ford in August primary, you don't have to vote again"
http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_96098.asp

The dirty tricks have started again.

There are reports out of Nashville that African Americans are getting phone calls telling them if they voted for Harold Ford Jr. in the August primary, they don't need to vote for him again now.

According to media reports from Nashville, volunteers driving senior citizens to the polls for early voting have had their voters tell them they'd received these calls.

120. I said that earlier tonight
I watched Hacking Democracy and So Goes the Nation....... by the end I just really wanted to see these traitors to our democracy hanged publically on the steps of the capital. Without even the most basic truth and honesty in elections there is no America.

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security"

(I should probably go tidy up the house before Agent Mike gets here)

62. That's right. What exactly is illegal that is probably not a misdemeanor?
The Republican Party would probably disavow any knowledge of it and say it was an unauthorized third party dirty trick. The Republicans are not stupid and would not waste money on something that does not work. That is the scary thing--there are some voters out there who would believe such an idiotic claim.

everyone in the media.

Send it to everyone.

Call in to all radio and TV shows taking calls - talk radio (especially local where it is happening), Washington Journal on Cspan, etc.

Send info to all Newspapers and all the national Cable channels, plus all the local news stations.

There is one day to get this out. Tomorrow is NOT election day.

Instead of the big story tomorrow being the horse race, polls, etc. We need the story to be about the voter suppression and sabotage tactics of the Republicans.

The Republicans are counting on there not being enough time to expose their dirty tricks before the election. We need to do everything we can expose it NOW.

There are many things that are already confirmed - the New Mexico disinformation calls, New Hampshire demanding the NRCC stop the calls, the robo-calls which a Philly Columnist has already written about along with the thousands of complaints to multiple campaigns and much more.

Tourism is the No. 1 industry here.

The Smoky's
Graceland
The Grand Ole Opry

And all that surrounds them - one big tourist attraction in EACH grand division of the state.

in Tennessee your number one industry is MARIJUANA
really great outdoor grown marijuana.

Perhaps tourism is number 2, but moonshine alcohol has got to be up there with it.

I can honsetly say that after DOZENS of vacations to Tennessee I have yet to come across a single person that was not nice with me. I met quite a few hillbillies that had no problem partying with a long haired city boy from up north.

Now Alabama on the other hand.....In 2 vacations I have had 2 terrible experiences with people going so far as threating to shoot me in an effort to run a long hair out of their town.

Visit Tennessee first before you denigrate it by thinking the only thing to see is Elvis' tacky house. There's the novelty of the Jack Daniels Distillery in a dry county, the poignant Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, lots of Blues in Memphis, too, and a big bunch of fish at the TN Aquarium in Chattanooga and at the Aquarium in Gatlinburg, the Parthenon in Nashville, (I can't personally recommend country music, but it's there, too, I understand), and See Rock City and Ruby Falls, and countless Civil War sites. And those pretty mountains!

We have a (D) Governor, and we're doing the best we can to not send one of the 1% who benefited from the tax cuts to the Senate. I'm just proud that Tennessee Democrats have finally produced a good enough candidate to scare the Repubs into this kind of behavior. It's all boiling down to get out the vote.

(edited for clarity)

56. Thank you, Flirtus.
I am happy to live in one of the most beautiful states in the Union.

In the Nashville area we have museums, a stunning new symphony hall and we are known as "the Athens of the South" both for the Greek architecture/Parthenon and the area's 14 colleges/universities. Nashville was the first city in the South to have a public school system.

Tennessee was the first state to pass child passenger restraint laws. The Parthenon replica is so exact that when the original in Greece was damaged by an earthquake, they sent engineers here to study how to repair it. The Smoky Mountains, Ocoee River, and Land Between the Lakes is some of the most spectacular topography to be had.

Oh yeah, how could I forget Rock City and Ruby Falls (I'm from Chattanooga.) Of course one should not forget Gatlinburg, Dollywood and the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.

118. Down to brass tacks: Does TN have Voter ID??
If so, it doesn't matter how angered & energized the African-Americans become, cuz the chances are 47% of them lack driver's licenses (Univ. of Wisconsin study), and the chances are 43% of the Hispanics--a fast-growing population in TN--also lack them (same study). Meanwhile, says that study, 85% of the white people are likely to have driver's licenses.

Is it a surprise that all the states that have passed severe Voter ID laws have Republican Governors?

Since you have to send away for a Birth Certificate ($10-$15, plus a delivery-time that's as long as the state wants to make it) to get a Voter ID card...and then have to find your way to a Driver's License Bureau (in most cases) to obtain a "free" Voter ID (remember, you don't drive!), it's unlikely many of the poor and minority populations would be motivated enough to jump through those hoops.

I repeat: Is it a surprise that Voter ID laws have been so popular in Republican states??

The U of W study--the only one of its kind, to my knowledge--was conducted in WI only, but there's no reason to believe its ratios can't be extrapolated into other states with concentrated populations of African-Americans and Hispanics.

FOLKS, IF WE LOSE MORE RACES THAN WE EXPECT, ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS WILL BE THE VOTER ID LAWS IN SO MANY RED STATES!

Governor Sonny Perdue (R-GA) and the Republican majority Georgia state assembly passed a voter ID law that has been suspended by the courts. I used my drivers license to vote today. One can use 16 other forms of ID including utility bills.

My step-father, a Tennessean, and a rural man already VOTED for Ford and so did his family.

Sure, some people are racist and won't vote for him, but believing a blanket statement like that is absurd.

What's wrong with black people voting? They vote Democrat, that's what.

It's an attitude similar to that espoused by soon-to-be-convicted-felon Ann Coulter, who thinks women shouldn't be allowed to vote because they tend not to vote for her side.

If anyone can explain the essential difference between this philosophy and that election Saddam had where he was the only guy on the ballot, I'd love to hear it.

That's what democracy means to these scumbags.

isn't he just another DINO? I think the real lesson here is that when given a choice between voting for a real republican and a wannabe republican, republicans are going to vote for the real one.

Anti gay, anti choice, but pro-raising the minimum wage another nickel. Why can't I get excited?

59. Two BIG reasons to get "excited", both of them begin with 'it's not about Ford'
1) It's not about Ford, it is about disenfranchising voters. It is illegal and morally reprehensible to disenfranchise any voter, but it takes a significantly more vulgar turn when African Americans are targetted because of the long struggle of the Black comunity for equal access to the voting booth. There are no words to say just how ugly this is.

2) It's not about Ford, it's about taking the Senate.

63. the world is not that "black and white"
no pun intended.

If I lived there I would not feel obligated to vote for someone in my state, where I live, who did not support equal rights for me, no matter what dirty tricks the other side was playing.

The fact that he exists at all as a "democrat" is deeply saddening, and disturbing. There is nothing wrong with having an opinion about that.

So no, I'm afraid I'll leave the excitement to the more excitable.

65. "Liberal" and "conservative"
are spectrums in both parties. Democrat does not equal liberal.

What you WANT is a liberal party. That's all well and good. But neither a "liberal" Democrat nor a "liberal" Republican (all relative) would get a vote in this state.

This race is between a conservative Democrat and a conservative Republican.

69. well, I suppose they would want my liberal ass vote
because I'm a democrat. What kind of double standard is that?

My ex's family is from Halls/Dyersburg - but fairly liberal themselves. On the other hand, when I picked up fresh garlic at the local supermarket for dinner (braised rosemary and parsley new potatoes, paneed cat fish with garlic and lemon baked to finish in iron skillet, fresh asparagus) one night the clerk asked me what that fancy stuff was. I mean, the garlic.

At any rate, I do want a liberal party, especially since the OTHER party distinguishes itself on supporting medieval stances on social issues. About "conservative" democrats: who gives a crap.

They're on their own as far as I'm concerned. I don't know why that's a bad thing in a supposed democracy.

Isn't that the way it should work?

I'm a scorched earth kinda guy.

No seriously though, at some point some time somebody has to vote for what they want their candidate to stand for. If somebody has a platform that INCLUDES voting against equality and against choice, then it's not a baby step. It's an endorsement.

I know my personal worldview is not everyone's but the reverse is also true. I am pleased that there is less acrimonious browbeating here now than there was six months ago.

I guess everyone's had time to think, or I may just be out of touch.

73. Do you think the
amendment to prevent gay marriage will have any trouble passing here? It will pass overwhelmingly.

It is a sad testament to the times we live in. Yet I have lived long enough to know the pendulum swings both ways. I am hopeful we are starting to see that swing now.

I also know that I can sit in Ford's office and voice my concerns and make my arguments and he will at least listen to me.

75. that's okay.
You vote your conscience and I'll vote mine. That's the only way this can work.

I completely agree that Ford is more likely to not throw you out on your kiester, but if he runs on passing that amendment then I could not on my conscience vote for him, nor would I politically or financially support anyone who did.

It's painful, and I'm not saying that to be disruptive or contrarian, because I want the dems to win, but I don't want to compromise my own principles about my own life to do it either. At some point, we earn the right to speak with our vote on local issues. If more people did it instead of just going along with the flow, Ford would have to modify his position to the left in order to remain a democrat.

I do not at all find it acceptable that the democratic ticket ISN'T overwhelmingly liberal. That means that for every pro choice vote we are canceled out by our own anti-abortion vote. Who needs republicans? We can cancel our own majority just be having polar philosophies in the party.

1. My clairvoyance and telepathy went out when I was eight. I did not know there were people who could read minds, but if you are one of them, your clairvoyance and telepathy must have gone out yesterday, because you were just plain wrong.

2. Your "feeling sorry" is offensive. We're on the same side, except that I despise assumptions.

3. I could give a shit about people guilty of stereotyping. What did you mean by that? Oh wait, you're clearly also omnipresent in addition to being telepathic.

Your response was presumed on a whole line of thinking that does not exist, and it was offensive. I accept your humble apology. My superpower is that I can predict the future.

I liked the parts of Tennessee that I saw, and I liked the people there. I was sharing an anecdote, not a judgement.

Ding. Poke me with fork, I think I'm done.

...that if we start a calling campaign to every black high school football and basketball player that the University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Memphis, UTC, et. al., is even thinking about recruiting, and telling them that so long as the state of Tennessee is run by Republicans...so long as they have Republican Senate and House office holders...so long as the leadership in the state allows, and perhaps instigates, this kind of blatant racism, they, the kids, shouldn't even take a visit. Announce to all that they'll look to other states and schools, ones that don't treat their black residents with such disdain and prejudice.

Somehow, I suspect that these guys will stop of their own accord if they thought it would mean they wouldn't be hearing 'Good Old Rocky Top' as much.

91. I suppose that in neighborhoods that are predominately black
you could use a reverse (or whatever they call it) phonebook and then cross that with the voter rolls. It just seems easier and potentially more productive to call all registered Democrats. Why would the race of the voter matter? Black, white, or yellow a democrat vote is a democrat vote if they’re gullible enough to fall for such a simple ruse.

If I remember correctly, it seems that there was something just before the 2000 election about expectant voter turnout was to be greater than the system could handle. So R’s were to vote on Tuesday and D’s were to vote on Wednesday. I don't think anybody fell for that one either.

Regards,

Mugu

They still win, right? This is what is TRULY FUCKED UP about this situation. The winners get to keep their seats, block investigation into the fraud, and run the country into the ground. This SUCKS. I am infuriated at this situation, mostly because nothing can be done to the candidates who won via the fraud.
