Late last week the numbers looked bad. People were telling lil boots but he wouldn't listen. So he decided to call Rummy in before he went to Crawford and say o.k. if this thing goes bad you'll have to step down but I don't think it will come to that. Just in case I'll hold on to that resignation letter you gave me a while back.
Gates was called to Crawford and told to get ready just in case but it was a long shot that he'd be needed.
Bush could have pulled Rummy early to stem the tide but didn't. I'm sure someone floated that over the table. That could have been the surprise trick to win. I'm sure though some argument over flip-flopping and weakness prevented it. Plus they NEVER considered the senate would be in play.
Monday polls must have reflected things but by then it was too late.
Rummy knew he was a gonner by early this morning. No formal resignation was submitted.
He was fired. Don't let them spin it. HE WAS FIRED. Bush just said it in the press conference. Gates was in Crawford
