The link above is reported to have all the undecideds (Dems and Repubs) + a few who have decided to vote for Alito. The great thing is you can select specific senators, to create your OWN list.

When you get to the page, click on the link that says "Select Individual Recipients" and you'll see the complete list. Then, you can create your own list, using the checkboxes next to each Senator's name.

Say you want to create a FAX message specially directed at the moderate Republicans. Select just those (unselect the others), then select FAX (it's the last selection in the three columns to the right of the Senators' names). Scroll down, write a subject line, select the Issue Topic from the drop-down box (Judiciary) and write your message. Then fill out your personal contact info. Decide if you want to be remembered next time you visit; if you want email alerts and if you want a copy of your message sent to thedeanpeople (they are a group working on vote count issues, not specifically working on opposition to Alito). Click to preview your message if you wish, then click "Send Message" and you're done! All the Senators on the list will be sent the FAX - you don't have to send individual FAXes.

The explanation I gave above sounds way more complicated than it really is to use the site. The site requires javascript to work. This is a great timesaver, imo.

Thanks to AndyTiedye, in the ActivistHQ for finding this great resource, and JackORoses for additional assistance.

4. You can do emails to Senators in the same way - all at once!
I'm glad you like it. I think it will really help. What a timesaver! And at the same time, the messages can be personalized, by creating your own list of categorized Senators (wavering Dems, on-the-edge Dems, Dems who are planning to vote Yes, moderate Republicans, etc.).

What a resource!

9. Wow! You did them all! Great!
But did you notice that you could also have done a few faxes with different messages...targeted ones?

The cool thing about the site is you could do one fax or email message to all the moderate republicans, then do another message for wavering dems, then yet another for dems who are planning a yes vote on Alito.

But faxing the entire list all at once certainly works too! Great job, acmavm!

Several Senators were taking polls of pro/anti-filibuster calls on Friday. It is, after all, something that affects the entire country. Each Senator's vote affects us all.

69. I know that Hillary Clinton's office was keeping track, when I called
early Friday. But she's my senator and we now have both her and Schumer on board. And I do know that some dismiss non-residents. But you'll have to admit that they are going to have to pay attention to this, hearing from so many of us, all at once. Great work, Wordie, and an excellent point. We should all include this in our message.:-)

Edited on Sun Jan-29-06 02:17 PM by mike_c
Senator,

I'm writing to urge you to do everything within your power to block the appointment of Judge Samuel Alito to the Unites States Supreme Court. I urge you to vote against Judge Alito's appointment if the matter come to a vote, but more important at the present time, I urge you to support a filibuster to block Judge Alito's confirmation.

There are numerous reasons to do so, but in the interests of brevity I will highlight those that I find most compelling. First and foremost, Judge Alito has clearly stated-- both in testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee and in his record of service on the Federal bench, that his judicial philosophy is strongly inclined toward undermining the checks and balances built into our Constitutional government to prevent the accumulation of too much authority in the Executive Branch. This is extremely dangerous. Quite simply, Judge Alito will work to undermine the authority of Congress. The danger in this course should be clear to all who have followed the news regarding recent abuses by the Bush administration. Congressional authority is vital to the maintenance of our republic. In question after question before the Judiciary Committee, Judge Alito refused to defend the importance of checks and balances, or to limit the power of the Executive, even to acting within the law.

Judge Alito also refused to confirm his commitment to women's reproductive freedom, and his record indicates disdain for the very notion. Any appointment which moves the Court closer toward overturning or limiting women's reproductive freedoms moves America closer to the days when women were mutilated and killed by charlatans with coat hangers, when women risked injury, death, and imprisonment to assert their rights to reproductive choice. Any step in that direction is one step too many. Judge Samuel Alito would return us to the horrors of compulsory unwanted pregnancy and desperate back-alley abortions if given an opportunity.

Finally, Judge Alito is too conservative for today's Court. He was nominated to replace a moderate Supreme Court Justice, and if confirmed his appointment will swing the court too far to the right. It will increase the number of right-wing ideologues on the Court at the expense of the voices of moderation. This too is dangerous for America's future. Judge Alito brings a conservative agenda to the bench that is out of step with the mainstream of American citizens. I believe that he was nominated specifically because of that agenda, by an administration that is assaulting the separation of powers and who foresees the day when allies on the Court will aid in the concentration of power in the Executive and the imposition of far right conservative legal ideaology on the American justice system.

I urge you to block the appointment of Judge Samuel Alito by all available means, including support for a Democratic filibuster. If you cannot vote NO on cloture, please consider abstaining. Please help send a message to the Bush administration and to the American people: Congress stands firm for the protections built into our Constitutional government and demands judicial nominations that are in the best interests of all Americans rather than meant to serve the agenda of the radical right wing!

Respectfully yours,
xxxx

I pasted it here to use the spell checker, but thought others might want to use bits of it so I'll post it.

The missing:

Durbin fax 202 228-0400

Boxer no DC fax? LA fax 213 894-5042 SF fax 415 956-6701

Kennedy fax 202 224-2417

Kerry fax 202 224-8525

Kohl fax 202 224-5623

Sarbanes fax 202 224-1651

Dodd fax 202 224-1083

Most of these will vote NO (Sarbanes? where does he stand?), a few will support filibuster, but we need to make sure they ALL hear from us anyway.

IT IS THEIR NUMBER ONE JOB TO OBSTRUCT THE RIGHT WING AGENDA WITH EVERYTHING THEY'VE GOT AND STAND-UP TO DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION.

THAT IS WHAT IT TAKES TO BE "TOUGH ON NATIONAL SECURITY."

It is impossible to be "nationally secure" if our Constitution is in shreds.

I am so sick of their cowardice. I can't take it anymore. I won't take it anymore.

Here's what I wrote:

Samuel Alito is so extreme against privacy and individuals, in favor of corporations and the unitary executive, that he absolutely must be filibustered and kept off the court.

If he is confirmed, everyone will lose. Democrats will become weaker and totally marginalized, while Republicans will continue their very damaging policies and crimes unfettered.

I am urging you to do the only right thing: filibuster Alito!

Edited on Sun Jan-29-06 06:39 PM by mcscajun
Don't know why Bob Menendez didn't...but I tried twice and the site defaulted to PRINT LETTER for him.

Weird.

Anyway...here's what I sent.
As a NJ resident and a Democrat, I am writing to urge you to join the
filibuster effort against the Alito nomination. Senator Kerry put it
better than I can, so I'll repeat what you've already heard and read
before: "I know it's an uphill battle," Kerry said on the Senate floor. "I
hear their arguments. You know, reserve your gunpowder for the future.
Well, what is the future if it changes so dramatically at this moment in
time?"

I fear for our future if this man is raised to our nation's highest court.
I fear for threats to our civil liberties, to a woman's right to choose,
to the separation of powers, and the separation of church and state. I
fear I would not live to see the damage undone.

I fear a justice so wedded to the principle of the Unitary Executive, to
presidential power unchecked by judicial oversight, and so opposed to the
fundamental right to privacy.

I know that the move we (I don't stand alone here, I know many other
Democrats urging the same action) are supporting and urging upon you is
not to be made lightly. This Alito nomination is the "clear and present
danger" we need to meet head-on. This is not a time for equivocation, for
saving our ammunition for another day. Please, stand with your fellow
Senators who are supporting this effort, stand for America, stand for the
Constitution and for keeping the Senate more than an Imperial "rubber
stamp". If not now, when?

I urge you to filibuster Samuel Alito’s nomination to the United States
Supreme Court.

Sincerely,

I'm working now on a slightly different wording to send to Robert Byrd and Harry Reid. Sen. Byrd got some money from me last year and has been looking for more. So did the DNC. I figure they might just listen to me on that basis, NJ residency notwithstanding. :)

Unfortunately, I can only reply if you are a resident of Pennsylvania. (Same type of reply from at least a half dozen Senators. I presume these replies mean that the e-mail was received but no-one looked at it because my address on the form was not from their state. Oh well....I guess the system works but may not be counted on the recipients end. Sorry if I used the wrong words. I was mighty tired last night. This site provides an invaluable service.

Think about it...
This is likely the most powerful grassroots political action tool ever developed.
It doesn't really help special interests or lobbyists out, their numbers are too few.
But for us masses, It's MAGIC!

Imagine the faxes, emails, voice messages piling up on Capitol Hill and in regional offices... fax machines out of paper mailboxes full
It's likely unprecedented.

Those in Power now got there by manipulation and media...they are able to make it appear as if there are many more of their kind than truly exist.

But when, We, the People step up and use a tool like this,
The numbers are obvious to anyone with eyes and ears.

We are in the extreme majority, and we always have been.

That Dem list had gotten goofed up. Here's the corrected one!

Senator Kennedy's Recommended list of the most important Democratic Senators to contact NOW:

Dems:
Pryor
Lincoln
Cantwell
Murray
Baucus
Harkin
Levin
Bayh
Lautenberg
Menendez
Lieberman.

You can select either an email, letter (not recommended, not enough time now), or a FAX to send, by using the radio boxes to the right of the Senator list. Click on the "Select Individual Recipients" if you would like to modify this list.

This is a great timesaver! You only have to write the message once, and it will go to all the Senators on the list!

52. Really? I had problems...
Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 02:16 AM by Wordie
but no harm done, I guess. Maybe it's on my end. I did notice that when you cut and paste the link, even when you use "copy link address," that sometimes it doesn't copy properly, and part of it gets cut off. But if the link you posted worked for you, I guess I shouldn't worry. Thanks, AndyTiedye!

On edit: I tried it again, and had the same problem. It's supposed to go to a longer list of Dem Senators, but the only ones that are on the list are Maria Cantwell and Mark Pryor. It's the list of Dems you posted. Does it really still work for you?

58. Just Sent This:
Alito would replace the separation of powers with a "unitary executive",
free to reinterpret and even ignore acts of Congress at will.
That alone should be reason enough to reject him.

He would also overturn Roe v. Wade, leaving America's daughters
at the mercy of back-alley abortion quacks.

Disputed national elections are decided by the Supreme Court.
We saw in 2000 how important that role can be.

This nomination is inimical to everything our party stands for,
and everything our Constitution stands for. We Democrats
must stand together to fight this nomination!

57. My Latest Anti-Alito Missive
Are we a nation of laws? Is the President above the law?
The Supreme Court is likely to be deciding this soon.

Alito subscribes to the doctrine of the "unitary executive",
which would grant vitually unlimited power to the President.

The Founding Fathers knew what a threat unchecked executive
power could be. They had to fight the American Revolution to
free themselves of a "unitary executive" (King George III).

They strove to build checks and balances into our Constitution
to ensure that we would never have a "unitary executive" here.
This has served us well for over 200 years,
through the Civil War and the gravest of external threats.
Alito would toss it aside to make us safer from "terrorists".
If he does, the terrorists have won.

Please vote NO on cloture for the debate on Alito.
Please vote NO on the "nuclear option" if it comes to that.
Please Vote NO on Alito if the nomination comes to a vote.

I just sent it to

Lincoln D. Chafee (R-RI)
Susan M. Collins (R-ME)
Judd Gregg (R-NH)
Chuck Hagel (R-NE)
Richard G. Lugar (R-IN)
John McCain (R-AZ)
Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME)
Arlen Specter (R-PA)
John E. Sununu (R-NH)
George V. Voinovich (R-OH)

I already sent the Dems one that was kind of similar.

66. Wow! Very well done, excellently written!
Straightforward and to the point! This guy has views on numerous issues that scare me witless, but this one is, by far, the most frightening. Both Kennedy and Clinton focused on this in their speeches. You're absolutely right that this is the most important one, and should resonate with senators, no matter what their persuasion or political philosophy!

Please I implore all dems to vote against cloture and support a filibuster of Alito.

If you had the conviction to vote no one him, then don't stick us with him by flip flopping and voting yes on cloture. If you can't vote no on cloture, make yourself scarce at the time of the vote for cloture.

PLEASE stand for something and support the people who support you every election!

73. My letter.
Subject: Democrats are in a position of strength with American voters

Dear Senator:

Recent polls indicate that Democrats are being increasingly favored by a substantial margin when the election is held in November.

Despite the RNC's attempts to dilute our efforts, now is the time to press ahead with defeating the bush agenda, to remove the crown (Alito) from the king. Americans appreciate strength, courage and honesty. What better platform to demonstrate that Democrats have those traits than on the Senate floor, with all eyes watching? You have the opportunity to express exactly what is wrong with Alito and compare it to exactly what is right about the Democratic party.

If you have joined in the filibuster effort, I thank you. If not, remember that you will not pass this way again. It is now or never.

Thank you for your kind consideration.

Thanks, Wordie! :patriot:
