Conservative plan to protest Wal-Mart (American Family Association)
Conservative plan to protest Wal-Mart
By DAVID CRARY, AP National Writer

NEW YORK - Long under fire from the left, Wal-Mart is now a target of Christian conservatives urging shoppers to boycott the huge retailer's post-Thanksgiving sales because of its low-key outreach to some gay-rights organizations.

One group, the American Family Association, is asking supporters to stay away from Wal-Mart on Friday and Saturday — two of the busiest shopping days of the year. Another group, Operation Save America, plans prayer-and-preaching rallies outside many Wal-Mart stores on Friday.

The corporate actions that triggered the protests were little different from those taken by scores of major companies in recent years — Wal-Mart paid $25,000 this summer to become a member of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and donated $60,000 to Out and Equal, which promotes gay-rights advances in the workplace.

Conservative leaders viewed these actions as a betrayal of Wal-Mart's traditions, which have included efforts to weed out magazines with racy covers and CDs with explicit lyrics.

"This has been Christian families' favorite store — and now they're giving in, sliding down the slippery slope so many other corporations have gone down," said the Rev. Flip Benham of Operation Save America. "They're all being extorted by the radical homosexual agenda."

1. Wal-mart shat in their own nest...
when they started pandering to these people's demands.

I certainly don't feel sorry for them.

11. A lot of low income people
and senior citizens on fixed incomes shop at Walmart because their dollar goes farther there..If Walmart were to close it would make it tougher on them. I do not shop at Walmart but I am not low income or a senior on a fixed income. I can afford the higher end stores so that is where I shop.

12. There are other stores.
I have lived and worked in the rural South and there are other chains that offer low prices - Family Dollar, Bill's Dolar Store.

Wal-Mart has kept a lot of people poor. They've driven out small businesses in the very rural towns I'm talking about. There used to be drug stores owned by pharmacists in those towns and tire stores, fabric stores, etc. before Wal-mart drove them out.

of products that Walmart has and I know Dollar General pays their employees less than Walmart.

17. You know what, though?
Poor people found a way to get the products they needed before Wal-Mart. Wal-mart has so much crap placed will-nilly all over their stores, I'm sure that people buy stuff they don't need in those stores all the time.

18. Yes you are right...
All them poor folk they can figure out a way to pay more elsewhere and get by with less stuff. Probably the reason they are poor is that they buy stuff they don't need anyway. You are right..let them figure out a way to pay more and get by with less.

5. Oh, this is a statement: "We're not coming in for 2 days!! We mean it!"
What sacrifice, to not shop there for two days. That's sure taking a stand, defending family values, etc. What a crock.

Anti-gay group drops plan to boycott Wal-Mart
11/22/2006
http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20061122/2047451.asp

NEW YORK (AP) - A conservative group that had called on supporters to boycott Wal-Mart's post-Thanksgiving Day sales to protest the retailer's support of gay-rights groups withdrew its objections Tuesday.

The American Family Association, which had been asking supporters to stay away from Wal-Mart on Friday and Saturday - two of the busiest shopping days of the year - said it was pleased that Wal-Mart had pledged to stay away from controversial causes.

Wal-Mart said it would make changes in the way it contributed to such groups, earmarking funds only for specific causes it supported, such as workplace equality, rather than giving unrestricted gifts.
