When do you think it's okay for myself and others to raise hell
if the Democrats don't use their majority power to begin dealing with gay equal/human rights issues within the next three months to two years?

Quite a few people around here believe the Democrats need to first take care of other business, before dealing with controversial gay issues such as marriage and Don't Ask, Don't Tell....that horrid military policy that's been responsible for the outrageous "firing" of dozens of valuable linguists who speak Arabic and the Iranian language of Farsi.

Obviously, some people feel there are more important social issues, affecting a greater number of people, that should be the priority.

Others are afraid we'll rock the boat and lose control of congress in 2008 (and the presidency) if we start focusing on gay issues too soon (or at all)....something I don't buy.

Personally, I don't believe you put human rights on hold for political purposes....not for one year, not for one hour, not for one minute, for ANY class of people.

However, I'm a realist. I know congress is not going to tackle gay-related issues right away.

Therefore, I'm reluctantly willing to give lawmakers a bit of a break....but my patience is limited.

Sadly, I'm used to the Democrats throwing myself and other gay people under the bus time after time, so I can't help but be worried congress will not deal with these critical human rights issues at all. Ever.

I think the Democrats grew back part of their spine during this last election cycle, and I would like to see it continue growing.

To the horror of some DUers, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay people just a few weeks before the midterms. And despite the prediction by some it would cost the Democrats the election, the last time I checked, we took back control of both the house and the senate.

Folks, there is never a convenient time to make tough choices.

African Americans would still be using separate restrooms and women would not be allowed to vote if our civil rights heroes had waited for convenient times.

And look what's happened. The earth hasn't stopped rotating....the sun continues to rise!

Shouldn't we please tackle equal gay rights issues sooner than later?

After all, it's the right thing to do.

Who is so heartless to argue otherwise?

1. Waiting until they're sworn in might be appropriate.

4. I wasn't being sarcastic or mean
I've seen a lot of people right here on DU bitching that the new Democrats in Congress haven't done anything yet. Doesn't seem to matter that they won't really be able to exercise their power until next month.

7. Wait until they're sworn in...
...and you'll find that the lobbyists were there before you.

Bug 'em now, 24/7, and don't stop until civil rights are guaranteed to all in the Constitution.

3. I agree.
Congress can deal with more than one issue at a time. The 1st 100 hours would be the time to deal with gay issues. The country is behind the Democrats right now and they have the momentum to push for fair legislation.

This is the time to write to our representatives urging them to support equal human rights for all.
