Plans included killing victim's mother, impaling boy and his siblings

JUNEAU, Wis. — David Day wants out of prison so badly that authorities say he planned to have five kids killed unless Gov. Jim Doyle freed him.
In something straight out of a TV thriller, Day, a convicted sex offender, allegedly hatched a plot from behind bars to have his 12-year-old victim's mother kidnapped and killed unless the boy recanted his testimony. After police got wind of the scheme, he switched to even more brutal tactics: hire someone to kidnap the boy himself and his siblings — and have them impaled unless the governor pardoned him and he got $1 million, investigators say.
"It does sound like something out of a television show, but unfortunately, I believe it was certainly David's intent to have something real happen," said Washington County Sheriff's detective Mark Sette, who helped put Day away on sexual assault charges.
"I think that he is just a guy who finds himself in a desperate situation," Sette said, "and he is attempting to do anything and everything to get out of that situation."
