Let's Be Fair (re: Hillary Clinton)
So, already I'm seeing a whole bunch of threads here on DU, regarding Hillary Clinton's statement that she will not support the surge. And for some reason, people 1) seem surprised by her stance and 2) say she's a little late to the party, and she must have seen how Bush's speech bombed.

Time for a reality check here.

She said several weeks ago (I believe it was during her appearance on the Today show) that she took Bush at his word once, and it didn't work, and she wouldn't make that mistake again.

2. She also extended her finger and found out

which way the wind is blowing.

She voted as she did for political reasons.

She is currently against escalation because she's smart enough to know that a majority of Americans oppose it as well.

The people led the way and some leaders are following.

8. I think that is selling her short
I don't think it's fair to say she's only voting this way b/c of how unpopular the war is w/ Americans.

She's an intelligent woman. And the first Senator from New York to sit on the Senate Armed Services Committee. That committee assignment, in particular, gives her a certain perspective on this war. She's talking to the generals and the military personnel.

3. Finally, some sense
She also came out against escalation on "The View." Yes, it was an odd forum, lol, but it was widely reported.

5. Thank you journalist!
The Hillary bashing gets to me sometimes as well.

She waited until he gave his speech, then, after he had chewed on his foot for a while and announced his BIG PLAN, then, she came out against it.

Nothing wrong with that.

9. Hillary Clinton wants to lead the country
It might be nice for her to express her opinion strongly and forcefully on the most important issue of our time.

Sure, she's playing it safe but she's also doing a very good job of becoming irrelevant.

10. If she'd said it before the speech
She would have been chastised for trying to steal the spotlight.

And there was never the smallest tiniest chance that the speech would NOT bomb.
