The National Electric Drag Racing Association

NEDRA formed to get people to race with Electric drag racing cars. They run Rail dragsters and funny cars and also cars that people bring off the street.

2. I once heard of someone drag racing a Prius
There was something about getting the maximum charge in the battery before starting. I guess someone must have more money that sense to risk breaking a car that nice.

I don't race it but I have already won, in that I haven't bought gasoline for 3 and one half years.

5. My husband is an active member of that group and has competed
in NEDRA competitions for several years. Actually holds the world record in one of the vehicle classes.

You'd be amazed at the speeds these cars get. They also race against gas cars in Portland, and win.

Over the short haul, the electric cars are, or can be, extremely fast. I was at the Late Night Nationals, which will be featured in Car and Driver magazine. Have seen the White Zombie in action numerous times. Great car!

My husband is currently in the process of building a new electric car. He's converting a Ford Probe and the goal is to have a daily driving car and one that can tear up the track.

Here's one from 1899:

Camille Jenatzy was first seen in November 28, 1898, when he entered his own electric car at the 1.8 km Chanteloup hill climb and won his first ever racing event. Thereafter he participated in several speed contests, which culminated in 1899 when he had designed and built an electric bullet-shaped streamlined record car, named La Jamais Contente - 'The Never Satisfied'. With this car he set the world speed record on April 29 at 105.882 km/h, a record, which stood for three years. Around that time, he also bought a 16 hp Mors and entered at the 1899 Tour de France, where he smashed a front wheel outside Vichy, which set him back and he came ninth. The following week at the Paris to St. Malo race he placed seventh. His last race that year was the Paris-Ostend event where he came fifth.

Two of the entries were electric. Morrison had planned to enter a new version of his carriage, but found it could not be readied in time. Instead, he removed the third bench seat of his original car to make room for more batteries. The race version dressed out at 3535 pounds.


The other electric car in the race was the Electrobat II of Henry Morris and Pedro Salom. The pair had completed their first car, the Electrobat I, in 1894. Their improved model was steered by the rear wheels instead of the front, and powered by two 1-1/2 horsepower motors mounted on the front axle, weighing in at 1650 pounds. With a range of 25 miles at 20 mph, the Electrobat II was one of the first automobiles to employ pneumatic tires.

7. I'm not a big drag racing fan, but would love to see this sort of thinking
in other motorsports.

In particular, I think it would be cool if Formula One imposed draconian restrictions on the amount of fuel that could be used in a race. The teams spend hundreds of millions of dollars in R&D trying to make the cars go faster, but for every success the have the FIA changes the rules to slow 'em down again for safety reasons. So why not change the rules so that the engineers focus on solving the problem of getting a car to go from 0-200 and back again with as much fuel efficiency as possible.
