I will say it again. I have learned more at DU than I could have possibly ever learned anywhere
I have been around here for a few years.

When I first came here I had been a victim of the MSM and "history" classes in school.

If it weren't for DUers, I would still be in the dark about the world.

It has been quite the eye opener when everything you have ever thought was true turns out to be nothing but smoke and mirrors.

I probably wouldn't have to take as many psych meds as well. Knowledge can be very hard on your psychological state. I feel like I am experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

I want to give special thanks to the people that came before me, especially Octafish. Don't ever miss his threads. It is a very tangled evil web.

11. i agree with the beginning of your post. i too value all i learn on this site.
i too was dependent on msm. now i started 24 hour three chanel watching msm during the impeachment of clinton. i saw what the nedia was doing. the lie to be told. i saw that immediately on first report you got more of the truth and as the day went on the story was fine tuned to be attack on clinton or dems. i saw the manipulation of msm. when i came to this site, i was already well aware of the manipulation.

but, the other issue is.... i never find truth to be painful. i know a lot of people do. it is a battling of ego that creates the pain. if you are protecting an image. like u.s. is god. that is ego wanting u.s. to be good. then the info given you realize u.s. isnt particularly good. but ego still wants to defend and protect that u.s. is good.
that is when truth is painful

i dont feel the need to protect, from truth. i dont care. what is ... is. and that is what i deal with. then.... i always see a higher in truth to find the purity, stillness, oportunity, higher.

13. I couldn't agree more
It's an oasis in an ocean of disinformation. And it IS disconcerting to learn that everything you thought you knew was either flat out wrong, or only a little bit of the story and "the Story" is really big, really ugly, frightening and evil.

I'm pretty well over the shock by this time, tho I still suffer outrage overwhelm about daily with all the atrocities that come out of this administration each day, but what's hard for me is to see people I know are quite evil (GHWB, Kissinger, and many other lesser players) get kudos and props and compliments about their service to the country, or their expertise, etc. when they appear on talk shows or are discussed on talk shows. Really bothers me.

18. I guess I'm not alone...
when I smack head first into that wall of reality, I am stunned...like a brain freeze. There've been so many :wtf: moments here...sometimes I retreat...lick my wounds...and come back to do it all over again. The thing I really like here is the spontaneous humor...that is such a frigging gift...when I'm lucky enough to be present for it.

25. One thing I have always thought about "history"...
There's a very good chance that NO ONE has got it right. The farther back you go, the more subjective it gets. Eventually it comes down to "whose version do you trust?"

29. Excellent point...
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 10:27 AM by Arkham House
...what do we really "know" about history? Look at the ferocious disputes concerning current events. Look at how an era--say, "the Sixties"--which many, including me, remember--has been distorted and transmogrified--despite millions of people who lived thru it...our memories are influenced by the years since... How can we know *anything* about eras that have slipped out of living memory? And how can we pretend to know anything about the Middle Ages, Rome, Egypt, et al? This topic has always fascinated me, and I've even written a novel with this as a sub-theme...a Sherlock Holmes pastiche, of all things...LOL...

26. Oh, my goodness yes
I've gone, in 5.5 years from an average voter (only in the presidential elections - couldn't be bothered with the others) to the activist I am and I owe 90% of it to my fellow DUers. I know so much political wonk stuff now, it scares even my family.

Yeah, deciding to take the red pill wasn't entirely easy on the psyche, but knowing what I know now, I would still have chosen the same way.
