Senators aim to restrict Net, satellite radio recording
Music industry backs the effort, but digital rights groups say it would erode users' music-listening freedoms.

Satellite and Internet radio services would be required to restrict listeners' ability to record and play back individual songs, under new legislation introduced this week in the U.S. Senate.

The rules are embedded in a copyright bill called the Platform Equality and Remedies for Rights Holders in Music Act, or Perform Act, which was reintroduced Thursday by Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Joseph Biden (D-Del.) and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.). They have pitched the proposal, which first emerged in an earlier version last spring, as a means to level the playing field among "radio-like services" available via cable, satellite and the Internet.... http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9588_22-6149915.html

Sirius wouldn't really be worth it for me if I couldn't use the Stiletto I already paid for to record shows and music and listen to it at my own leisure. I'm so glad that sleazy Imus-kiss-ass Biden is gonna go down in flames as badly as he is from Obama or Clark in the Dem nomination.

1. If the Dems keep on acting like this- thier majority won't last long
And you can damn well kiss any political realignment goodbye.

Deservedly so, too- IMO.

10. Yep- including Berman & Waxman on the House side, I will bet
The Dems as a party get tarred repeatedly by their DINO's (or by other special interest corporate lobby ass lickers). At any given time- on a given issue they'll go out and legitimize and enable any of a number of far right anti-consumer, anti-labor and other deregulatory policies.

One by one- it affects how ordinary people's perception (my brother being a case in point- he pretty well thinks that ALL politicians sell out the public interest for $$$ in their war chests). This is a major reason why people get cynical or apathetic and either don't vote- or :gasp: are willing to vote Republican.

Think about the track record of some high profile senators and representatives over the past 12 years.... seems to me that it's to be expected that a significant number of people will feel that way- for what look to them look like damn good reasons.

20. You miss the point
when a significant number of Dem (in the house last year it was around 40) consistently vote with Republicans- against the public interest, it tarnishes the ENTIRE party in the eyes of the electorate.

And I predict as this years plays out, we'll see much more of this. Far right enabler won't change their stripes just because they're in the majority. Wait and see.

21. This is where the repukes had an advantage
When they voted as one on things, no one could be accused of not knowing where they stood. Of course it was standing with Evil, but still. The Democratic Party members who are not in the back pockets of the Entertainment cabal need to squelch this. I am soooo sick of short sighted entertainment idiots trying to lock everything down. They are the ones killing music.

Her corporate sucking up just bugs the hell out of me.

I also heard--but I don't know if it's true--that her husband Richard Blum is making money off contracts for Iraq.

29. I didn't vote for Dianne Feinstein
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 10:06 PM by truedelphi
I voted for Dick Mountjoy.

He doesn't support rights for gays, but his office is open to everyone

Feinstein supports gays (in theory), but whenever I call her office and talk to staff the first thing they ask is what corporation I am representing.

A tough choice - someone who doesn't support 11 per cent of all people, or someone who doesn't support anyone but her own elite crowd.

I figure, of the two, it is possible that Mountjoy will sometime, somewhere get a little insight into the gay issue.

Feinstein is too busy doing dinner and the opera with the George Schultzes to
get insight

9. Joe Biden, the credit card companies' best pal ("A Delaware Corporation")...
Delaware and South Dakota have no usury limit and no limit on fees that can be charged from credit cards. A bank can charge any interest rate they can get a consumer to agree to.

Thanks, Joe, for being such a "friend" to the American consumer. :grr:

He played ball with the republicans.

Got rid of welfare for people, while keeping it for corporations.
Signed the DMCA, and NAFTA.

What did he get for it? They tried to impeach him...

14. you can still record shows and music
Radio listeners would be permitted to set their devices to automatically record full radio programs on certain channels at certain times. But allowing users to program their devices to automatically find and record specific sound recordings, artists or albums--say, only all Michael Jackson tracks played on the service--would be prohibited. So-called "manual" recording would be allowed, as long as it's done "in a manner that is not an infringement of copyright."

22. Well, that sounds like a standard that is impossible to comply with...
First, it doesn't mention HOW such restrictions would be enforced, also, the above OP never mentioned that shows couldn't be recorded, just that the FORMAT they are recorded in will be so riddled with DRM that it most likely wouldn't work with 90% of devices out on the market, like Ipods.

If they can take our radio and internet, we are done for. I think that I need to look into shortwave and start an operation. Information is the last tool that we have in the war against evil.
