Laura Bush in Paris for literacy meeting
Mon Jan 15, 8:21 PM ET

PARIS - First lady Laura Bush, a former teacher and librarian, heard educators from Afghanistan to Madagascar describe their fight with illiteracy during a United Nations round table in Paris on Monday.

Participants in a UNESCO conference here on teaching reading outside of traditional school settings briefed Mrs. Bush on programs in Madagascar, Afghanistan, Egypt and Burkina Faso.

"Of the 781 million adults who cannot read a simple book, more than two-thirds of them are women," said Mrs. Bush, honorary ambassador for the United Nations' Decade of Literacy.

"Ending illiteracy is a challenge for every country," she said. "Yet investing in literacy and education helps governments meet their other fundamental requirements — it improves opportunities for children and families, it strengthens economies and it helps keep their citizens in good health."

6. ...spare me, pickles
Can any rational human being actually believe that this faker really cares about literacy or any education? This is window dressing designed to make these beasts look like real humans.
How can this woman cast her pearls before a swine like the idiot and try to come off like some kind of caring individual?

9. Was Laura ever a teacher?
I thought she was a librarian at an elementary school for a couple years and then quit after marrying GWB. I know her total education "career" lasted a very few years and ended about 30 years ago so I don't understand why she's such an expert in this field. The hushed reverence the press uses to describe her short work history is annoying.
