Help settle a squabble....
...between my partner and I. We are both professional singers. Both Democrats.

we were both recently asked to sing at a Republican event.

He refused, citing high moral fiber.

I accepted, citing "Sure I'll take their money and the free meal, what the fuck? Abd maybe get a peek at their playbook in the process."

I might add that I have been numbed to the possibility of singing for Republicans, having been employed by an organization which required me to sing for most State functions (inaugurations, Republican Presidential funerals, etc.)

I might also add we REALLY need the money.

Am I a schmuck? A whore? A Vichy stooge?

1. If you're comfy with the choice, then agree to disagree
and move on. Don't let this become more of an issue in your relationship than it already has.

4. If you don't take their money, then some GOPer is going to get it
Take the job. I see it as making sure the money is flowing to the left.

6. As long as you share the income with your partner,
he shouldn't have a problem.
"Right"?

7. I've done this before
I charged double my usual fee, but still felt like I needed a shower afterwards. At least you'll be together. I was by myself and had to put up with getting hit on by Rethug trophy wives (shudder).

8. Depends on the Republican event...
and just which Republicans will be there.

Look, ever since Reagan the Republicans have been pretty much umbearable, but that's mainly them damnfool neocons that have pervertd the party. It's conservative, sure, but if I had to hate all Republicans and conservatives as much as the neocons in charge now, I'd have to shoot half my family. Besides, half the private gigs you do are for Republicans anyway-- they just don't make a thing of it at a lot of parties.

Now, if I was an entertainer and someone offered me a gig at Republican Women for Choice or some such thing, I'd jump at the chance. A Libby Defense fundraiser would be something else.

10. You are a professional.
Ya gonna do a background check on everyone who ever hires you?

The soloists who sing at our church are generally not of our religion. They are hired and paid (and marvelous singers).

Your profession is to sing, not endorse their agenda.
