Dubai Ports: The Bush base is solid
Despite their delusions to the contrary, the Bush base does not consist of conservative Republicans, Fundies, Freepers or any other faction of citizens. The Bush base is corporations, especially multi-national corporations.

What should worry us all is that the decision to sell U.S. ports to the UAE, and Bush's statement that he would veto any roadblock, fully exposes just how little Bush cares about anyone besides his corporate buddies. This revelation bespeaks a level of arrogance burgeoning on the messianic. And perhaps that arrogance is not unfounded because Bush has yet to encounter any meaningful fallout, no matter what scandal has emerged.

Many people on DU seem hopeful that Bush has finally overreached himself and will fall. I wonder if he simply doesn't need to pretend anymore, if his hold on the White House and the government machinery is so secure that screaming freepers and bellowing Senators are irrelevant.

If the Republicans -- who have as much reason to distrust this sale as anyone in the country -- fail to stop this deeply unpopular move, then we can kiss goodbye our illusions of a functioning democracy. This will confirm that the fix is in so deep, the corruption so entrenched, that elections are meaningless.

I think we're already there, but I would love to be proved wrong. I would love some sign that casting a ballot still has some meaning, not to mention a real effect. That our Congress is more than just a puppet show.

2. I agree. I'd love to see the Congress actually work together to void
this sale, have the Chimp veto it (would be his first veto in over 5 years), and then have them override his veto. That would be a stinging blow to his bubble.

3. Congress has failed so many times.
If they fail on this then the USA is surely a Fascist State.

... that Ike himself warned us about. This globe is not run by presidents, premiers or prime ministers, nor by generals, by any congress or parliament. It is owned and operated by CEOs, by multinational corporations and boards of directors whose loyalty to the bottom line supercedes loyalty to nations or to duty as citizens of the world.

Remember that famous clip of Bush speaking before a banquet of his most wealthy contributors, each decked out in tuxes and gowns? After looking around and chuckling about a world of "haves" and "have mores", Bush laughingly quipped to the crowd, "Some people would call you the 'have mores'. I call you my base."

That's it in a nutshell, folks. As for those who only think they constitute Bush's base -- how sad and deluded they are.

But is it in time or too late?

The next few months should be very... interesting.
