AT&T sees 10,000 jobs cuts after BellSouth deal
NEW YORK (Reuters) - AT&T Inc., which has agreed to buy BellSouth Corp. for $67 billion in stock, on Monday said it expects to cut some 10,000 jobs between 2007 and 2009, once the acquisition has closed.

The deal, announced on Sunday, would bring ownership of Cingular Wireless, the No. 1 U.S. wireless telephone company, under one roof, which Wall Street analysts have said would streamline management and allow one parent company to enjoy all of the financial benefits.

18. But they're the only ones that count now, didn't you get the meme?
Been that way for the past 5 years, of course the have nots voting for the other side have been convinced by OxyRush that it's simply a matter of time until they are haves too. If it wasn't for us evil libruls trying to take their stuff to give to all those have nots driving Cadillacs, why, they'd be haves already!

3. Yep, cut thousands of jobs, and jack up the phone rates across the board
Gotta love those corporate monopolies:eyes: So much for breaking up Ma Bell, she's back and bigger than ever. Thank God I don't have to deal with her out where I live, little local rural phone co-op, and MCI for long distance.

12. I live out in the back of nowhere
Cable service is non-existant, and a high speed connection is prohibitively expensive. Besides, I happen to like my little rural phone co-op. It is a remmenant of some of the sensible programs that FDR set up. How many phone companies pay you back a dividend check each year?

Besides, it is much easier, both technologically and legally, for various government agencies to tap that VOIP than it is to tap my land line:shrug:

15. I understand
We were sick of dealing with our local company who claimed to be a small company and had a monopoly on things.

It actually was cheaper for us to use broadband internet, and Vonage vs dial-up internet + local phone + Long distance.

10. Pay more .... get less. That's the whole idea.

It really does help a regulated monopoly when they have all the regulating agencies in their pocket.

5. AT&T was broken up because they were too big in 1983
And now they're going to back to the way they were when they were broken up.

We need more diversity. Oil companies are merging, less competition, gas prices go up. Same for most other industries. The bigger keep getting bigger, and the little guy, the average American, pays more and ends up holding the short straw in the end.

11. You are right....
This is one of the first things that the Dems will have to do when they get back in power....install regulation of these companies.

They are going to have to break up the phone companies again and the media companies...and many more industries.....small companies and entreprenuers are getting drummed out of busines.....

6. I swear I saw an AT&T guy on tv last night saying the opposite.
He said there would be very little job loss, and in fact, probably a net gain of jobs. I wondered when the truth would come out. Didn't have to wait long.

17. union
This is nothing new. The unions were the only balance to these corps. Union busting is the underpinning of their strategy. Remember nixon was involved in taft-hartly in 48 reagan busted the air traffic guys. As flawed as some unions are, they helped bring up all workers. So buy american if possible and support unions.

21. I was just thinking that these people at Cingular haven't had
their union very long and now they're going to lose it AND their jobs.

I don't need to be told about unions. My husband is secretary/treasurer for our union local and I do the IT and website.
