Tom Cruise Bullies Paramount about South Park Scientology episode
http://www.nypost.com/gossip/pagesix/pagesix.htm

HOLLYWOOD bully Tom Cruise got Comedy Central to cancel Wednesday night's cablecast of a controversial "South Park" episode about Scientology by warning that he'd refuse to promote "Mission Impossible 3," insiders say.
Since Paramount is banking on "MI3" to rake in blockbuster profits this summer, and Paramount is owned by Viacom, which also owns Comedy Central, the tactic worked.

The "South Park" episode, "Trapped in the Closet," pokes fun at Scientology and shows Cruise, John Travolta and R. Kelly (who is not a Scientologist, but has a song called "Trapped in the Closet") literally in a closet.

The episode, which first aired last November, was set to rerun Wednesday night, but was mysteriously pulled at the last minute.

This really pissed me off because I had Tivoed it in anticipation. It was brilliant when I saw it in November but I had no idea that I wouldn't be able to see it again. There is a a sequence in it that animates the Scientology creation myth that will blow your mind.

Cruise is such an asshole to want things censored that he disagrees with. I personally think he is becoming such a joke that his career will be seriously harmed by it.

13. hollywood isn't about acting. it's about the look.
they got tom cruise because he can look intense.
they got kevin costner because he can look like an all-american guy-next-door.
they got pierce brosnan because he can look suave.
they got ahnold because he can look strong.

and dustin hoffman can't get a leading role anymore because his talent is actual acting.

64. Actually it began in Astounding SF Magazine in 1950.
John Campbell, the otherwise astute ASF editor was bamboozled by L. Ron Hubbard for awhile and let him have one whole issue of ASF to promote his SF idea which was morphing into a religion. The other SF editors of the time razzed him for this.

You are too kind! I think his antics have already made him a laughingstock.

All this wanker has done with his histronics is ensure that when they put that episode on DVD, the thing will sell like hotcakes. What a foolish putz!

I don't know anyone who can watch any infotainment item about him without making some snarky comment about "Who's really the baby-daddy?" or "How long can he cower behind the winter wardrobe?" A 80+ year old relative of mine recently made a reference to his absurd behavior in that context...and one who isn't glued to the TV gossip shows, either!

7. So now influence buys censorship, although...
If I was a part of a religion that believed an ancient galactic ruler named Xenu put all the excess population (numbering in the billions) on Earth, placed them unconscious around all the worlds’ volcanoes, then dropped nukes into said volcanoes, killing them all, then their spirits were shown movies of Christ, etc, and that’s where all our religious and suppressed beliefs come from, and so now these “body thetans" inhabit our bodies and make us evil, etc ...

I wouldn’t want that shit made public either.

15.  sequence in it that animates the Scientology creation myth
this one?

I'm going to tell you a story. Are you sitting comfortably? Right, then I'll begin.
Once upon a time (75 million years ago to be more precise) there was an alien galactic ruler named Xenu. Xenu was in charge of all the planets in this part of the galaxy including our own planet Earth, except in those days it was called Teegeeack.

Now Xenu had a problem. All of the 76 planets he controlled were overpopulated. Each planet had on average 178 billion people. He wanted to get rid of all the overpopulation so he had a plan.

Xenu took over complete control with the help of renegades to defeat the good people and the Loyal Officers. Then with the help of psychiatrists he called in billions of people for income tax inspections where they were instead given injections of alcohol and glycol mixed to paralyse them. Then they were put into space planes that looked exactly like DC8s (except they had rocket motors instead of propellers).

These DC8 space planes then flew to planet Earth where the paralysed people were stacked around the bases of volcanoes in their hundreds of billions. When they had finished stacking them around then H-bombs were lowered into the volcanoes. Xenu then detonated all the H-bombs at the same time and everyone was killed.

The story doesn't end there though. Since everyone has a soul (called a "thetan" in this story) then you have to trick souls into not coming back again. So while the hundreds of billions of souls were being blown around by the nuclear winds he had special electronic traps that caught all the souls in electronic beams (the electronic beams were sticky like fly-paper).

After he had captured all these souls he had them packed into boxes and taken to a few huge cinemas. There all the souls had to spend days watching special 3D motion pictures that told them what life should be like and many confusing things. In this film they were shown false pictures and told they were God, The Devil and Christ. In the story this process is called "implanting".

When the films ended and the souls left the cinema these souls started to stick together because since they had all seen the same film they thought they were the same people. They clustered in groups of a few thousand. Now because there were only a few living bodies left they stayed as clusters and inhabited these bodies.

As for Xenu, the Loyal Officers finally overthrew him and they locked him away in a mountain on one of the planets. He is kept in by a force-field powered by an eternal battery and Xenu is still alive today.

The episode already aired!

And is anyone REALLY ANTICIPATING a third Mission Impossible? I must be out of it because I didn't realize 1 and 2 were all that successful.

In fact, any odds that more people already saw the South Park episode than they did 1 or 2? Or, better still, more people already saw the South Park episode than those planning to see 3?

29. It's basically understood
in the Industry that Tom Cruise is finished. He's become such a laughingstock that it's literally a liability to be associated with him. We all knew he was done when he fired the woman who is widely regarded to be the BEST in the PR business in order to hire his untrained, inexperienced (but Scientologist) sister to handle his publicity. Unfortunately, the results of that decision can be seen jumping up-and-down on Oprah's now infamous couch and espousing on the evils of prescription medication and pyschology.

The final nail in the proverbial coffin will be when MI3 tanks. This movie will have to make an unbelievable amount of money in order to resurrect T.C. from laughingstock to serious movie star. Based on what I've seen of MI3 so far, I don't think it can do it. But, knowing Tommy Boy's Ego, the metaphorical death of the Star "Tom Cruise" will not be quiet or easy. He'll go down whining and bitchin' and complaining and moaning. And then his "wife" Katie will divorce him after 5 years (collecting a previously agreed upon amount of money for giving him "Straight Cred") and become the most successful C-movie actress in History!

32. this line had me LOL
"But, knowing Tommy Boy's Ego, the metaphorical death of the Star "Tom Cruise" will not be quiet or easy. He'll go down whining and bitchin' and complaining and moaning."

You sound very "in-the-know" and this description of him really matches how he seems to be from the "outside." It will be entertaining but yet a little sad. He came from nothing to such tremendous success. He actually acted well in a few things like Rainman and Born on the 4th of July. But what will destroy him is his ego, the result of this success. Hubbard's brilliance was designing the courtship of celebrities and catering to their natural narcissism to promote the "religion". They created a monster and I doubt he'll ever wake up from it because his ego will never allow the possibility that he could have got it so wrong.

So you are definitely right to predict that he won't go quietly. It will be like slow motion car wreck complete with clinging to his looks with sickening vanity. He'll be ranting and raving but his forehead will be forever smooth.

55. Yeah,
you could consider me "in the know" as these are people I've met or dealt with or worked with. I met Tom years ago and found him wonderfully charming and unaffected by it all. And then I ran into him a year ago (about the time of his Brooke Shields-psychobabble dust-up), and deeply missed the Boy from long ago. His attitude was condescending, he was no longer kind, made absolutely no effort to hide his disdain for those in the meeting and everyone got the sense that he felt WAY above "it" all. Sad, too, because the script being offered would have been a great stretch for him.

He's done. I don't think he has the inner strength to make an Elizabeth Taylor or Julia Roberts-like comeback (remember, Liz was branded a homewrecker back when that label had some "umph" to it and Julia Roberts was widely "understood" to have a drug problem and had Top Directors publicly turning against her). But these two women had at least a toe or two still dipped in Reality, could look at their situation with a clear eye and then take the hard steps to get back on track.

Tom is convinced it's everyone else against him (and his Religion) and, because of that, is determined to punish all of us. Before too long, though, the shoulder he's carrying that chip on is bound to break. Won't be pretty, either.

Watching it again after reading that Rolling Stone article I know now that everything in the episode is true. The whole thing is well documented. Then it became a whole episode about Tom Cruise in the closet. I think it's this dialogue he can't tolerate. He's hiding behind scientology or at least is secretly relieved that he can.

The voice of John Travolta makes me giggle endlessly.

it's about Tom Cruise i think it could be true. IMO Lestat was the best bit of acting he ever did, i was pissed when i first heard about him being cast but as i watched it i realized that a blood sucking controlling effeminate vampire was about as close to who he really more than any part he ever played. In fact i don't think he was acting at all, i think that all came natural to him.

76. And just because his *publicist* denies it...
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 09:59 PM by Wrinkle_In_Time
... doesn't mean it is false, no matter how much you want it to be false. It works both ways.

Yeah, I know that the burden of proof is on the accuser, but why should his publicist's statement (with all its inherent bias) bear more weight that the popular opinion (with all its inherent bias).

If you want a different take: just how much circumstantial evidence does it take for you to start thinking "Hey, wait a minute...". Apropos, what did you think of the O.J. Simpson verdict?

EDIT: one too many 'p's in "apropos". At least I didn't use it as a synonym for "appropriate". I hate that.

Why is he upset? Don't his religious beliefs teach that everyone else is a figment of his imagination? If so then it's part of his mind that's telling him his beliefs are crackpot..

all I see is the lunatic jumping on Oprah's couch and the idiot bashing Brooke Shields for how she treated her depression. Paramount should throw him a box of Kleenex and usher him out the door.

Chlorpromazine is used to treat psychotic disorders and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility. It also is used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting, to treat behavior problems in children, and to relieve severe hiccups.

Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 10:09 AM by tjdee
I mean, they keep saying "Tom come out of the closet", and hasn't he sued some tabloid for saying he's gay?

Hmm. I'm watching it now, and I guess I'd have to change my mind--the "This is What Scientologists Actually Believe" thing would obviously send Crazy Tom and Isaac Hayes over the edge. But dude, if that's what they actually believe....?

Hmm.

75. Censorship of any kind is wrong - And I would never have watched this
episode (I don't watch South Park) but when I saw this thread, I immediately was drawn to it...

Thanks Tom Cruise! Your efforts to prevent people from seeing this actually may have caused it to be viewed by more people such as me!

PS: I thought this episode was hysterical! Poor Tom...he's upset about his sexuality and most people if not all who don't belong to Scientology believe its a farce....he just can't handle the truth...and if he was secure, he would just let this go...

83. They've shown it several times already
I've seen it twice. By doing this, Cruise has raised this episode to mythic levels; now a lot more people will want to see it. Parker and Stone should release it on DVD, like they did with The Passion of the Jew (the release of which, by the way, came on the same day as the release of Mel Gibson's Christo-snuff film "The Passion").

Parker and Stone should send flowers and candy to Cruise, an to Isaac Hayes for good measure.

87. Tom Cruise - The Ass Sumurai
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 07:35 AM by dorkulon
My favorite hometown publication has already proved you can stand up to Cruise and live to tell the tale. Cruise threatened to sue them for being on their "50 Most Loathsome Americans" list, and they responded by doing an entire issue about what a dick Cruise is, including a psychanalysis and the story of how they used the legal threat to get on TV's "Celebrity Justice." The whole episode was the funniest thing to happen in Buffalo since McKinley got capped. Anyway, they continued to fuck with him throughout the year, and he's on the most recent "Loathsome List," and they're still standing--I think they scared him away.

The cool thing is that the South Park guys aren't backing down either--look at their response:
"So, Scientology, you may have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun! Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu!!!" They signed the statement, "Trey Parker and Matt Stone, servants of the dark lord Xenu."

I love funny people with balls.
