Why I am a Democrat
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 12:03 AM by dsc
I am a Democrat because Democrats brought us Social Security, Medicare, food stamps, the voting rights act, the civil rights act, most of our state's gay rights laws, and a host of other great things. Democrats won WW2 while mostly abiding by the Constitution. Democrats nearly eliminated poverty among the oldest of our citizens. Democrats cut hunger in our country. Democrats ended Jim Crow and gave the grandchildren of slaves the right to vote, go to school with and use the public accomodations of whites. Democrats democratized college enducation with the GI Bill and the Pell grant.

Today Democrats are fighting for civil and gay rights. Today Democrats fight to save the Pell grant which allows our poorest citizens to go to college. We have a record of standing up for the least of us. Democrats are the true heirs of Jesus. I am a Democrat and proud of it.

On edit I am proud to be a member of the party of FDR who ended the great depression and defeated both Hitler and Tojo. I am proud to be a member of the party of Harry Truman who desegregated the army, signed the GI bill, passed the first civil rights bill, recognized Israel and funded the Marshall plan. I am proud to be a member of the party of JFK who lit the spark for civil rights, the moonwalk, and brought class to the White House. I am proud to be a member of the party of RFK who fought to keep poverty a national concern. I am proud to be a member of the party of LBJ who ended Jim Crow, gave medical care to the elderly, and tried to eradicate hunger. I am proud to be a member of the party of Carter who brought peace to the Middle East and appointed a qualified judiciary who looked like America. I am proud to be a member of the party of Clinton who gave us 8 years of peace and prosperity. I am proud to be a Democrat.

3. Shhhh! Quiet about Operation Tombstone!
We don't want the secret plans to get out! "They" might get suspicious and start illegally wiretapping or physically searching "us."

4. I'm a Democrat, with caution
If all the party offers me is a Repug lite who ignores my interests while pandering to corporations and appeasing the GOP lunatics, then I'll vote Green just to get rid of him. I will have voted his opposition in the primary, already, in an attempt to get rid of him within the party structure.

If the party offers me anyone who takes a leaf out of Schweitzer's playbook, I'll not only vote for him, I'll contribute and offer my services on phone banks, mailings, and whatever else they need.

So I am a Democrat. Just offer me a candidate who espouses traditional Democratic positions and will stand up and fight the right.

5. I'm a Democrat because I think for myself.
And enjoy others who think for themselves. I am not a lemming who needs to be told how to procreate, worship or not worship, or when to wave a flag. I don't think a bunch of white men in DC should be able to dictate the terms of my life--or my death--to me. That's why I'm a Democrat.

8. I am a conservative democrat....
Cause I basically hate the republicans espically the religious wing of the party.

Plus the things that the Democrats stand for are the things that makes america great like social security and social welfare programs

13. That sounds more like a far left democrat than a conservative one
which is my basic question.

9. Born and raised a Democrat and proud of it! Thanks Mom and Dad!
My Dad was a Union organizer and a union arbitrator. I walked many a picket line when I was young. Attended many union meetings, with my Dad. I can't imagine not being a Democrat. Just got off the phone with my Dad, he had his 78th birthday yesterday, we had a great republican bashing session! He is the best! :bounce:

11. I am a Democrat because I cannot be a Republican
not now, not ever. I could never align myself with the worst criminally corrupt political movement in the history of the United States. If we still have a democratic republic when they're finished with us it will be by the very grace of God... and I don't believe in a god. It's damn near gone, friends. I'm grieving our loss already.

16. Amen!
I am also proud to be a Democrat. I'm getting a little tired of the relentless negativity around here.
