...just points out in a backhanded way how invulnerable these guys are. Any of us could list 2 dozen misdeeds that should have brought the house down...but 20 years of planning, ruthless PR, and a complicit congress allow them to sweep it all under the rug. Continued misdeeds are proof of continued strength. Low approvals mean nothing when you control events, the stories about the events, and elections.
I used to think an independent investigator like Fitzgerald could work his way deep into the administration. But at this point, any legal jeopardy can be delayed till well after 2008, if it gets started at all. DSM, election tampering, WMD, Sibel, and torture can't even get off the ground.
I used to hope that a top insider who can't take it anymore comes forward and reveals all. Didn't work for a former cabinet member (ONeill) but it might if Tenet or Powell find their consciences. This seems less likely the closer we get to the end of the administration term.
I used to hope that a completely credible, charismatic, straight-talking hero would stand up for the american public and just the force of his/her reason and clear thinking would make it obvious that one-party rule can't continue. Not only do I not know who that would be, but even when some likely candidates stand up (Feingold, Hacket) their own party throws a wet blanket on the effort.
I used to hope that the opposition party could find creative ways to use their media exposure and unity to expose administration misdeeds in a consistent, strong way. Not even close on that one. Rule 21 looked good...but where exactly is that 9/11 report?
I thought, after 2004, that election reform would sweep through congress because opposition to fair elections is not defensible. Even in the face of media bias, at least we could count on a fair counting of votes next time around. Not only has nothing been done nationally that I know of, my own state recently approved illegal, uncertified Diebold machines, for some reason.
I thought that if enough LTE, blogs, and news shows spread opposition party thinking, that people could would be open enought to change their minds and if the people changed their minds, they would demand change from their congress. The GOP and media work tirelessly every day to keep those minds closed with hate, polarization, and loyalty to party.
I'm not suggesting we give up...we need to be more creative.
