About had it with the Cynthia McKinney "controversy."
Maybe she hit the CP guy who grabbed her, maybe she didn't. Maybe it was an understandable reaction to being grabbed, maybe it wasn't.

Dick Cheney shot a 78 year old man in the face. Nobody is talking about arresting him, even though, because the SS kept the local authorities away, nobody knows exactly what happened. Indeed, no one seems too interested in finding out.

Argue all you want about what she 'deserves,' but I think anyone who thinks that this would be happening if she were not a) a Democrat b) a woman c) African-American and d) one of Bush's more outspoken Congressional critics is dreaming.

As for what's just, well, when Bush and Cheney are impeached and imprisoned we can talk about justice. Till then, there is none in this country.

Thank you for putting this in perspective. If she gets charged with this, we should demand Cheney be charged for his assault with a deadly weapon, because that is what it is.

6. I agree with you 1000%!
Congresswoman McKinney is one of the few bright lights of this congress. We don't know the truth about this incident and maybe we never will, but to turn on her so quickly when we know what this group of criminals in charge are capable of is worse than reprehensible. You know, sometimes the cops are wrong. Sometimes the cops overstep their authority and use poor judgment. Sometimes they are just thugs with badges. Why can't we at least remember who has stood up for justice and truth and fairness and who has not...

16. She kind of made this worse herself.
She hit someone with a phone and this part is indisputable, she failed to immediately apologize, instead giving a statement of regret. She is a member of Congress and needs to act in a more dignified manner. Her lack of an apology has only made this worse.

Plus the Cheney thing is different because the guy he shot not only wasn't mad about it but he actually apologized to Cheney for Cheney shooting him! The media decided it was dead and over as soon as the guy came out of the hospital apologizing.

22. I, For One, Am Not Arguing It Wasn't Those Things. I Just Think They're
the root differently. I think all that she has had to endure from being a black outspoken congresswoman is what caused her frustration and impulse to lash out at the cop for having the nerve to stop her, due to her involvement with racial profiling in the past. I think those traits you mentioned are absolutely a big part of this, but I think they are big parts of why she overreacted, not why the cop did. I hope that's fair to say.

23. Apparently, I have to post this information again.
Friends, this has nothing to do with her being a Democrat, a Woman, Black, or anything else except one of the elite annointed Czarists in Washington.

If you, I, or anyone here, touched just one single finger to a police officer, we would be arrested, probably beaten, and charged before the sun set twice.

Before every demonstration, someone will usually put up a webpage showing protest instructions and what NOT to do. One of the inevitable instructions is "never touch a police officer" because that gives the officer probable cause to arrest you under the charge of either assault or battery on a police officer. If you walk up to a cop, and lay one finger on them, you are going to jail, not in a week, not in a day, right then and there.

Now, before I close, http://www.vote-smart.org/bio.php?can_id=H0965103 will show you Representative McKinney's information. I could also fill your computer screens with links to some of her speeches that I like. I like her voting record, I like her statements, but I can't understand how she rates higher than any other person in our nation.

If we are to be outraged, and we should, we should be outraged by the Czarist mentality and double standard for Elected officials. I may start a thread on all the laws that don't apply to Elected Officials, that you and I have to obey. One of the basic beliefs that exists in this nation is that no one is above, nor below, the law. We need a movement in Congress to cease the exemptions of Elected officials, from the laws that we are forced to live under.

24. You paint all congress people with the same brush -
we are to believe that all that matters is that they are "Czarists" - and that the fact that McKinney is one of W's most notorious critics, and that she's highly popular both with her own constituents and with dems elsewhere, is irrelevant?
Interesting.

Also i'd like to point out that this security officer was not just "a cop she walked up to and layed a finger on" - rather he serves as a security guard at her place of work.

28. She was engaged in her dutiies as in officiial duties right?
If she was... which is what I understand she was... read the US Constition. The special place of US Representatives and Senators is laid out in that document. If she touched the officer OUTSIDE her official duties you are right. If this was while going to her office as called by her duties... special rules do apply. By the way... every time they place Senator Kennedy on the No Fly List, TSA is violating this as well.

Now if she did this duirng a demonstration, you are fully correct. What makes this so muddy is that this special place for US Reps is spelled out in the Constitution.

I guess that explains why that Republican's wife was arrested, probably beaten and charged at the SOTU address. Oh wait. Even though she admitted to abusing the police officer they did nothing.

You cannot tell me that if the cop had stopped Dennis Hastert that cop wouldn't be filing for unemployment today.

31. Here's what I posted on another thread about this
I think it's appropriate here:

*****************
The cop report read something like this

"At this point the Alleged Congress woman told me to 'talk to the hand', which I interpreted as a threat and perhaps and indication that she was insane. She wagged her head in a strange fashion, much like I used to see black women do when I worked in the Great America Mall and on programs tailored to black persons on television. It was then that she produced the 'weapon', a small black device which may have been a mini taser, electroshock device, perhaps even a laser. A protruding shaft on the top of the device looked to be more like an electrical terminal which conceiveable could deliver up to 10,000 volts of electricity to the attending officer.

She threatened to show her ID, which of course could have been easily purchased as a fake, generated from any number of online sources.

I was not amused when she mentioned that I might just as easily been a 'QUAIL' sneaking up on her, much like the gang of Al Queda Quail which attacked our Vice President who took no chances during that attack and sprayed the entire area with buckshot to be safe. If only the VP had had an officer such as myself to assist him in 'finishing the job', it would have been my honor to skin and mount the offending Lawyer for display on Mr Cheney's office or home wall.

Once the Assailant plunged her electronic device deeply into the center of my heart I felt a powerful jolt, and recoiled in horror and abject incredible pain. The medic was able to save my life my using a water supply container to force two large tablets of Motrin down my still sore throat. My heart luckily continued to beat, and I was just glad to be alive.

The Assailant should be made an example of, I requested that Headquarters release an all points bulletin and arrest and detain any and all black politicians, both male and female (in case she was in disguise) found in the Capitol, but they were no where to be found, they later claimed that there were no pressing issues to be voted on and conveniently skipped town to avoid the dragnet. We alerted Fox News so that they could begin the manhunt and to slander and misinform the public about these individuals.

Karl Rove came to assess the situation and while there gave 8 guards a raise, slipped me a 100 dollar bill for being a "good american", and laid hands on three other officers with terminal disease, at which point they were instantly cured.

For some reason the tape of this attack by the intruder was somehow ruined by someone taping over it with footage from "Girls Gone Wild", we are investigating the problem with this tape and if needed will produce a new version reproducing the attack on the officer with professional actors.

I have asked for leave for a time after this grueling and frightening attack by this moonbat liberal, as I am afraid that they may actually be wising up and not standing down or cowering as we'd been informed they would once the anthrax had been spread to them and the Media.

I May also have a good cry with my wife and her lesbian lover once I realise that I can allow myself to do that, that I am a man with feelings just like everyone else.. except for black people, especially those pushy black women who won't listen to anyone.

Officer XXXX Dated XXXX

PS. Okay, so it was a POKE instead of a Punch, but it hurt a LOT, and you could put someone's EYE out like that."

*******

By the way, for all the argueing going on about this (and yes it IS a big deal in my opinion, this is FRAMING and letting YOU know that YOU better NOT say NO to a COP, or they'll blow your goddam head off, get used to it) we need to remember how these things work.

Cheney can SHOOT A MAN IN THE FACE, and a little black woman who's pestered to death by righties is not allowed to DEFEND herself. What if Cheney's 'prey' had decided to SHOOT BACK and Defend HIMSELF?

Also, the way this will play out is, that on the FRONT PAGE it's a story about Cynthia ATTACKING a COP and PUNCHING HIM. Later as the real story comes out, it will be on page 47 of the newspaper and dropped by the TV stations, until someone says something about Tom Delay on the Bill Maher show, at which time, like last week, a LYING ASS BITCH NAZI SURFER PHONEY will say, 'They're ALL corrupt, more democrats than republicans, and at last Tom Delay isn't VIOLENT like McKinney was when she shot and ate that cop..'"

Don't forget to add the book deal, and how that would help him buy a better home. Well after they'd find him a deal on the new home and they pay him twice the market value for his old one. Oh, and don't worry about the book selling, they'll buy up the books by the case and send them as presents for illiterate Republican contributors. They love getting free stuff! You help them learn to read, and they feel good about stopping gays from destroying their marriage, young women from aborting their babies, and stopping those other pesky minorities from getting affirmative action that some of them even neeeeeeeed.

This incident has certainly brought the trolls out from under the bridges.

49. I suspect it occurred because Delay was about to go down and the GOP
needed to play the worn out, "see the Dems are bad too" card, don't you? I suspect she was set up as cover for their upcoming crimes. She's always an easy target for them.

It's what they do. The final retraction and vindication of McKinney will be printed in 6 months on page A27.

61. Agree with you 100%! Impeach the REAL Criminals!
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 12:40 PM by TheGoldenRule
While the rethugs blow the McKinney thing out of proportion, the biggest criminals in this country-Bush & Cheney along with the rest of the BFEE-are walking around scot free!

:wtf:

What gets me is that the chickensh*t Dem Congress won't even TRY to impeach them and far too many people around here defend them which is a TOTAL crock.

Damn it! The Dem Congress should AT LEAST TRY to nail the REAL CRIMINALS!

Don't they get it that public opinion alone would be enough to do the BFEE in?! :banghead:

63. WHY IS THERE NO ASSUMED RIGHT TO SELF-DEFENSE?
Considering that a woman is raped in this country EVERY TWO MINUTES, why are so many arguing that - NO! the man who grabbed(maybe, maybe not) her is a Cop, her right to self-defense is somehow NON-EXISTENT!
IF - a big word - she was A: grabbed from behind without B: knowing who grabbed her, why does it matter that the person who grabbed her was a cop, and her right to defend herself against a POSSIBLE attack is just totally GONE? Is their power to grab ANYONE they choose THAT absolute?????
Some posters say IT DOESN'T MATTER whether or not she knew the person "grabbing" her was a cop or not; all that matters is that she touched a cop, and therefore she belongs in jail. Doesn't this destroy a woman's right to defend herself in case she's being attacked - must she first ask her attacker:
"You're not a cop, are you?" And if the attacker says yes, is she then required to surrender without complaint???

For some women, this is not JUST an intelectual argument, here's a few statistics that some people should care about MORE:

76. In the current climate, I'm irritated this is even a story.
Why is this a big story when we have members of congress under investigation, under indictment, lying on their websites, blaming staffers for their own plagiarism, telling one another to go f*** themselves on the chamber floor and flipping birds at the press and their critics?

Conduct unbecoming is running rampant in our government. Why is this event such a noteworthy affair? I'd be more impressed with the reporting if it tied the incident in to a larger pattern of the narcissistic behavior of most of our elected and appointed officials.

but believe that this may be Rove's last gasp. I think the indictments will come down for him breathtakingly soon.

And with the hammer going away, the best of the PNAC dons will soon be in the slammer. I am watching for Cheney, who goes down in the next wave, yes?

All this minor shakeup at the WH is to give the illusion that reform has already happened.

How pathetically lame. Rove and Cheney are on their way down. This is the the stomp of an ever shrinking foot, and a tinny snarl of impotent rage.

87. Police should be selective in whom they get warrants for.
Just because a woman poked a cop with a cellphone after he grabbed her arm doesn't mean she should be arrested.

The police should focus their resources on dangerous criminals.

90. of course you are right
i don't know enough abt the case for my opinion to have any weight but my secret suspicion is that, from the sound of it, there has been low level warfare and disrespect of mckinney for years for not wearing the lapel pin or whatever the bone of contention is that gave the cop an excuse to grab at her

if someone grabs at me, as a woman, if i am startled, i am allowed to strike back

now i do believe what cheney did was an accident and he prob. feels terrible, but you know what, when i have a startle reaction as a woman, that too is an accident, and i too feel bad when it turns out not to be justified but you cannot train yourself out of a startle reaction and if you could it would be stupid and unsafe to do so

to prosecute over something like this what's batshit crazy
