Economic Report: U.S. Continues To Lag World In Paid Vacation Time

The United States continues to score at the bottom when it comes to average vacation time. The new study finds that the United States is the only country out of 41 where federal law doesn’t mandate vacation days. On average U.S. workers with 10 years at a job who works five days a week receives only 25 days off per year. That ties the U.S. with Singapore and only puts the country one slot above China. Brazil, Finland, and France mandate that workers receive 30 days off per year.

In today's fluid workplace, few of us get to rack up that much tenure with a single employer. And every time we switch, that vacation-accrual clock gets reset back to zero, which in many cases can mean an extended period with no vacation at all.

And now the latest hot trend is the companywide holiday shutdown, eating most or all of what little vacation time you might have accumulated. If you want to vacation any time of the year other than between Christmas and New Year's, your're SOL.
